Industry's viewership jumps 60% after it takes House of the Dragon's old slot on HBO

As a seasoned gamer of life and TV shows, I must admit that I was initially unfamiliar with HBO’s underrated gem, “Industry.” However, after reading about its remarkable growth and potential for success, I find myself intrigued by this series set in the world of investment banking.

These days, launching an original TV drama can be quite challenging. However, HBO stands out as one of the few networks capable of making them successful, with series like “Succession,” “Euphoria,” and “Hacks” all receiving positive responses. On a lesser-known note, there’s “Industry,” an HBO drama about investment banking that has been on for two seasons. It seems that the third season could be crucial for the show; if viewership doesn’t increase, it might not continue.

It’s great news for everyone involved, as the viewership for Sunday’s season 3 premiere exceeded that of both the season 2 premiere in 2022 and the series premiere in 2020 by impressive margins. One might wonder if there is an interest in a program that features young, driven individuals engaging in intimate relationships while striving to accumulate vast fortunes. Based on The Wrap‘s report, it seems there definitely is!

Two main reasons contribute to this surge in viewership. Firstly, the series titled “Industry” airs on Sunday evenings at 9:00 p.m. EST, a time slot formerly occupied by “House of the Dragon,” one of HBO’s top-rated shows. The audience for the second season of “House of the Dragon” grew steadily as it progressed, peaking at an impressive 8.9 million viewers during the finale. Some viewers were left with the impression that the series wasn’t finished, which could explain why a few may have tuned into “Industry,” hoping for more dragon-filled adventures.

However, you’re undervaluing the Industry. It’s been receiving favorable reviews, which is partly due to HBO giving it the chance to grow and establish itself. Furthermore, the Sunday night slot on HBO consistently attracts viewers, irrespective of its content. In an era where live viewing is becoming less common, people still anticipate quality programming from that time period.

As a gaming enthusiast, I eagerly awaited the third season, with our team readying up for this exciting journey. Notably, we brought on board some big names, like Kit Harington, famously known as Jon Snow from Game of Thrones, who joined us as Henry Muck, a tech CEO. It’s intriguing to see how he’ll adapt to the modern era in our game. Plus, the rumors about his few nude scenes are certainly adding an extra layer of anticipation!

To summarize, the season 3 premiere of Industry attracted approximately 300,000 viewers, a relatively modest number compared to House of the Dragon. However, this figure represents a significant increase for the series and, with positive reception and an advantageous time slot, there’s plenty of room for audience growth as the season progresses. The A.V. Club notes that when Barry premiered on HBO in 2023, it drew 700,000 viewers initially, but its audience had multiplied fourfold by the end.

It’s wonderful watching TV series develop naturally like this! Admit it: I hadn’t given Industry much consideration before, but now that I see it being promoted, my curiosity is aroused. Traditional methods of growth appear to be working for HBO, and I find that delightful.
