Industry’s Marisa Abela: I thought my career was over when I first saw thyroid cancer scar
As an ardent fan, I must say that Marisa Abela’s journey is nothing short of inspiring. Her resilience and courage in the face of adversity are truly commendable. The young actress, diagnosed with thyroid cancer at just 23, has had to grapple with fears about her career and body image, yet she emerges stronger than ever.
Actress Marisa Abela, known for her work in the entertainment industry, shared a heart-wrenching account of the moment she initially viewed her post-surgery scarred body following cancer treatment, expressing concerns that her acting career might be at an end.
In late 2020, just after wrapping up the initial season of the captivating TV series where I portray the character of Yasmin Kara-Hanani, a privileged billionaire, I was diagnosed with thyroid cancer in November.
Speaking of that pivotal instant, she mentioned, “Upon my initial visit to the restroom post-surgery, when I beheld my reflection in the mirror, I couldn’t help but think, ‘This is it, my professional life has come to an end’.
‘[My neck] was stapled, bloody. It wasn’t pretty at all, and the scar is big.’
She additionally shared her apprehensions that her upcoming acting parts might only involve characters labeled as having a large scar on their neck, and how her diagnosis at the tender age of 23 had significantly altered her perspective on her own physique.

Upon receiving a cancer diagnosis, whether it be thyroid or otherwise – not inherently fatal but still daunting – I can’t help but express a sentiment that I would never inflict upon another: an unease that pervades one’s body. This feeling is something I encountered, and it’s a sensation I wouldn’t wish on anyone. (The Times)
For a long time, I carried something within myself unaware of its presence. This discovery has significantly transformed the way I perceive and connect with my own body.
After completing a course of treatment that involved taking radioactive iodine pills, Ms. Abela, known for portraying singer Amy Winehouse in the movie ‘Back to Black’, emphasizes the benefits she gained from this experience.
She finds her job crucial and takes great pleasure in it, but even in situations like when she plays the character of Amy, where chaos might ensue, she’s experienced more than that and knows what truly matters, she stated.
As I traverse the halls of cancer wards, I can’t help but bear witness to scenes that are both heartrendingly bleak and deeply saddening. It serves as a stark reminder, urging me to appreciate life’s precious moments in their fullness.
