Industry season 3 episode 8 recap: Doors close and open in the finale, "Infinite Largesse"

As a seasoned observer of the financial world and its denizens, I must say that the third season of Industry has left me utterly captivated. The characters, each with their own unique struggles and triumphs, have become a reflection of the relentless, cut-throat nature of the industry itself.

It’s the end of the finish line for Industry season 3 on HBO and the finale certainly delivers, giving us big moments for the central characters while also leaving a lot open for the confirmed fourth installment. It’s the end of an era for Pierpoint, which will likely be a good thing for most of the characters. I’m not totally certain what Eric will do next, though I have a lot of hope for the others. The eighth and final episode of Industry season 3 premiered tonight on HBO and Max, titled “Infinite Largesse.”

WARNING: Major spoilers for Industry season 3 episode 8 are below.

In simpler terms, the final episode of Season 3 concludes in a looping manner. The initial scenes depict a flash-forward where Robert addresses an assembly, and it’s uncertain whom he’s addressing or what he’s discussing. However, his appearance suggests that some time has elapsed since we last saw him.

The next chapter of Pierpoint

Following Eric’s significant act of deceit the previous week, coupled with his suggestion to bring in Ali, Pierpoint is gearing up for sale to the Egyptian investment company Al-Miraj. However, this isn’t an ideal scenario and significant adjustments are necessary. Eric is appointed to handle the fallout in the London office, while Tom jets off to New York, and he addresses the team over a microphone. At first, employees express their concerns, fearing mass layoffs, but Eric manages to relate to them and delivers a persuasive speech. Wilhelmina is taken aback by Eric’s performance, while Tom sends him an approving thumbs-up emoji. It may not offer complete job protection, but it’s a step in the right direction.

In a somewhat unnerving encounter, Harper finds herself face-to-face with Otto, who initially appears rather overbearing. However, upon referring to Petra as a “snitch,” Otto surprisingly softens his stance and expresses a desire to continue collaborating with Harper.

Rishi eagerly plans to depart from Pierpoint and accepts Harper’s invitation to discuss employment prospects at his office. However, he insists on Otto’s arrival first. Harper and Petra are prepared to part ways cordially, but Otto feels let down by the turn of events, despite the financial gains. He had hoped for a different outcome. Petra admits to Harper that she acted without consultation, out of fear, and Harper forgives her. For now, they appear to be in harmony, but their peace won’t endure.

In a turn of events, Rishi encounters Harper, only to be taken aback when Sweetpea enters the scene. Harper reveals that Sweetpea will collaborate with her instead, leaving Rishi feeling embarrassed. The women inform him that his role is no longer necessary since a computer can handle his tasks, causing Rishi to grow anxious. On the brink of pleading for his job, he expresses the need for someone like himself, an ‘execution guy’. However, Harper has already secured one – Anraj, who Rishi spots outside on his departure.

On her drive back to London, Yasmin receives a response from Hanani Publishing, predictably enraged. Despite Yasmin’s assurance in her blackmail material, something Hanani mentions resonates with her: she is informed that she has no family, which is indeed accurate. This revelation makes Yasmin realize the importance of maintaining connections with influential individuals for support.

Robert and Yasmin reach an enormous manor, whereupon Henry greets them joyfully. He shares updates on his life, expressing a newfound desire to commit to community service. He also mentions the possibility of backing Robert’s business idea and extends an invitation for them to spend the weekend due to his uncle’s birthday celebration. Yasmin firmly suggests they depart the next day. It appears Henry is quite solitary and would welcome any companionship. Later, he visits Yasmin in her room, expressing regret for past behavior, which she dismisses lightly, stating she finds his recent transformation questionable.

The following day, Yasmin has a touching talk with Lord Norton, Henry’s uncle. He expresses remorse for Yasmin’s father’s mistakes and assures her that she bears no responsibility for them. They exchange a warm embrace, and Norton emphasizes the value of both biological relatives and chosen family. This sentiment brings solace to Yasmin, sparking determination within her about her next steps. She then approaches Robert with a cheerful demeanor, suggesting they visit someplace together.

Yasmin’s grand plan

In the garden of the mansion, Yasmin and Robert stroll hand-in-hand. Their romantic moment leads to them sharing a kiss and intimacy outdoors. Yasmin consents to Robert’s actions without further mention in this installment, yet I ponder if such an event unfolds during season 4. If Yasmin were pregnant with Robert’s child, it would certainly add complexity, particularly considering the other events that transpire in this episode. However, these are merely my speculations. Additionally, Yasmin expresses her love for Robert, and he reciprocates.

After finally having the opportunity she’s long desired, Yasmin sits down for a heartfelt talk with Henry. She begins by sharing that she previously had an intimate encounter with Robert, before inquiring about his well-being. Henry reveals he’s been grappling with difficulties and finds no pleasure in life’s offerings. Surprisingly, both Yasmin and Robert choose to stay for dinner, which is graced by other attendees such as Otto, all elegantly dressed. In an unexpected turn of events, Henry takes the stage and astounds everyone by disclosing his and Yasmin’s engagement. Only Robert abstains from applauding.

In the sequence that follows, we revisit more of Yasmin and Henry’s dialogue. She expresses a desire for commitment and companionship, despite their uncertainty about mutual feelings. Shocked, Henry makes a proposal. But why would Yasmin choose this path when she loves Robert? It’s because she yearns for the stability – financially and socially – that she has lost. Although she may never come to love Henry, she can endure him, and he can provide her with numerous things.

Yasmin quietly apologizes to Robert at the dinner and he tells her he understands. The next morning, the family gets ready for a hunting trip while Robert packs his trunk to drive back home. He says goodbye to Yasmin and a quick montage of their memories together plays. In his car, Robert thinks back to Yasmin telling him she doesn’t think she’s ever loved anyone, and he smirks, knowing that she loved him.

At Pierpoint, the business has been renamed Al-Mi’raj Pierpoint, a change that leaves Eric taken aback. Upon entering his office, he finds Wilhelmina and an HR representative present, prompting him to understand this is a turning point in his career. Wilhelmina informs him that due to significant changes within the company, they no longer require Eric’s services. Tom will also be let go. The company offers Eric $20 million as a form of compensation, though its effectiveness in lessening the impact is short-lived. Bill’s unexpected reminder about seeing each other on Thursday leaves Eric perplexed until he learns that it refers to Bill’s memorial service – a grim revelation about Adler’s passing.

Harper is ready to move on

At work, Harper learns online that Jesse Bloom has been freed from prison following a four-month sentence for tax fraud. She then confers with Otto, expressing her intention to launch a short selling venture and her desire to return to New York to manage it. Otto warns of the risks involved, but Harper remains resolute. He also mentions that Jesse might be interested in investing, having reached out to Harper. As they wrap up their discussion, Otto cautions Harper not to live without caution.

In my own words, I, Yasmin, am adjusting to this new phase of life and feel compelled to reach out to Harper about our missed wedding connection. We have a heartwarming chat that seems to skip a beat, as if we were just talking yesterday. I express my well-deserved congratulations for your recognition in Forbes’ “30 Under 30,” reminding you of the quote Eric gave us for the magazine. Despite our unique bond, it appears we’ve managed to smooth things over once more.

On his final sit at the desk at Pierpoint, Eric sheds tears, and unexpectedly receives a call from Harper. She expresses gratitude for his estimate he provided for the article in Forbes. In a jovial manner, Harper inquires if he’s job hunting, leaving Eric feeling emotional before he advises her to stay safe.

Later on, we witness a startling, swift turn of events as Rishi enters his apartment to discover Vinay seated at his kitchen table with Diana. It happens to be Rishi’s birthday, and there’s a cake for him, but he’s too distressed, given his heavy financial burden. Vinay informs Diana that Rishi owes him close to $600,000, causing Rishi to break down in tears. In an instant, Diana starts scolding Vinay fiercely, accusing him of destroying their family. All of a sudden, Vinay pulls out a gun and fatally shoots Diana in the head.

In another significant aspect of Yasmin’s new existence, she hires one of the women her father had mistreated and forced to sign a non-disclosure agreement. This woman now serves as Yasmin’s assistant. In a particular scene, they share cocaine together, and Yasmin inquires about the woman’s child, wondering if it is her sister. The woman refutes this claim, stating she is with the baby’s father, not Charles. She then confides in Yasmin about her experiences on Charles’ boat, revealing that girls as young as 12 were sometimes present there. In an attempt to learn more, she tries to ask Yasmin if Charles had ever behaved inappropriately towards her, but Yasmin is unwilling to listen. Instead, she becomes angry and when the woman attempts to comfort her, Yasmin breaks down crying. This emotional moment resonates with Yasmin, yet she refuses to acknowledge it.

Yasmin gathers herself, exits the room, and instructs one of her team members to dismiss the female employee.

A new beginning for Robert

At the closing moment, it’s revealed that Robert is presenting his proposal to Greg (a nod to the past!) along with some other individuals. With a million dollars of pre-seed funding from Henry Muck and half a million more from Ashford Asset Management, he invites them all to become part of his venture right from its start. Whether or not he’s moved to California as planned isn’t clear, but it’s certain that he’s optimistic. This is one of the happiest moments for Robert in a while, and I must say, I’m genuinely thrilled for him too.

Looking forward to the fourth season of “Industry”! HBO announced its renewal on September 19, but details about filming schedules and release dates are still unclear. I can hardly wait to see where the story goes next, especially since it seems like we’ll be exploring new locations as Harper considers returning home. The season three finale left us with a huge cliffhanger, so I have no doubt that the upcoming episodes will be even more thrilling and chaotic.

Stream seasons 1-3 of Industry right now on Max.
