Industry season 3 episode 6 recap: It all comes crashing down in "Nikki Beach, or: So Many Ways to Lose"

As a seasoned finance enthusiast and avid observer of the cutthroat world of Wall Street, I must say that this week’s episode of Industry has once again proven to be a rollercoaster ride of emotions and strategic maneuvering. The dynamic between Harper, Petra, and Yasmin is reminiscent of a high-stakes game of chess, with each move carefully calculated and potentially devastating.

HBO’s financial drama series, “Industry,” has expanded significantly since its debut season, introducing fresh characters, settings, and intricate plots. However, the show shines most when it delves into office betrayals and crafty maneuvers. As such, the sixth episode of the third season, titled “Nikki Beach, or: So Many Ways to Lose,” stands out as one of the strongest episodes in the series. This latest installment feels like the quintessential “Industry” episode we’ve seen in a while, and I’m eagerly anticipating what’s to come next.

Tonight, on Sunday, September 15th, Season 3 Episode 6 of the Industry was aired on both HBO and Max. Here’s a recap of its key events, but beware: major spoilers lie ahead!

In the closing scenes of last week’s episode, Yasmin confided to Robert, while they were both in bed, that she had taken her father’s life. If you, like me, found this moment intriguing, rest assured; tonight’s episode provides all the answers. “Nikki Beach, or: The Multitude of Ways to Part” begins with a flashback to that day on the boat, showing us the aftermath of Yasmin and Charles’ argument.

What really happened to Charles

The father and daughter argue fiercely as Charles approaches Yasmin on the upper deck of the boat and insists on hugging her. She accuses him of wanting her to witness him with the crew member, and they exchange harsh words. Charles calls Yasmin a “slut” and says she’s talentless. In response, Yasmin tells her father that he wishes she wasn’t alive, and he decides to jump from the boat. Regretting his actions, he cries out for help in the water, but the boat moves too quickly, leaving him behind.

In more straightforward terms, Yasmin shares with others about Harper’s situation, who offers solace and assists in keeping it a secret. Later on, Yasmin chooses to view her father’s deceased body, which leaves her deeply unsettled as he appears drastically altered from his usual self.

Now that Harper has learned the major secret of Pierpoint, she’s swiftly moving on to a new plan. While jogging in the park, she encounters an investor named James Ashford and engages him in conversation about the ESG trend. During their chat, Harper uncovers that he knows Petra – a surprising fact, as Petra was her colleague. This revelation leaves Harper puzzled, as she can’t help but wonder why Petra had been in rehab.

Eventually, Harper reveals to Petra some information she gathered regarding Pierpoint, without explicitly naming the bank. Instead, she talks vaguely about it. Petra seeks clarification on where Harper obtained her intel, but Harper evades the question by discussing her conversation with James and emphasizing that banks are currently vulnerable. Meanwhile, Harper brings up the topic of rehab again, causing confusion in Petra.

Harper and Petra are on the hunt for information

In simpler terms, Harper and Yasmin get together, and Yasmin shares that she saw her father’s deceased body. Yasmin feels as if her dad has somehow triumphed because she can’t erase that memory. However, Harper tries to comfort her, saying it’s not accurate. Meanwhile, during their time out, Petra rings Harper and asks her to arrange a meeting with Pierpoint via Yasmin. Initially unwilling to involve Yasmin in their scheme, Harper declines. But Petra is puzzled and insists that they need these meetings to validate her research hypothesis.

Harper and Petra devise a plan involving false job interviews and meetings to uncover any financial issues banks might have. Their first target is Sweetpea, who they entice with a seemingly genuine job opportunity. However, when Harper begins probing Sweetpea about Pierpoint’s debt and questions she finds uncomfortable, it becomes clear that she has been deceived. This upsets Sweetpea, causing her to become agitated and leave. As she departs, Harper attempts to intimidate her further.

Alexander North contacts Yasmin, sharing a tale he plans to publish through an associate who had intimate ties with her father. He describes his contact as a “courtesy call” about the story, but it appears he’s using it as leverage to persuade her to reconcile with Henry. He hints that he could prevent the article from being published if she resolves issues with Henry. However, Yasmin shows no signs of yielding to his suggestion.

Things don’t look good at Pierpoint

The situation at Pierpoint has become somewhat turbulent with the arrival of the new CEO, and Rishi wonders if there’s cause for concern. Eric, who seems to be uneasy himself, offers a vague response. Eric extends an invitation to Yasmin for a steak lunch, hinting that he senses her distress. However, one might question whether Eric’s intentions are purely friendly or if there’s something more behind it – after all, isn’t he known for having hidden agendas?

Sweetpea confides in Anraj in the kitchen at the office, telling him about the interview and the fact that she believes something bad is coming Pierpoint’s way. Anraj advises her to tell Eric or at least someone about it, and when Robert comes into the room she tries to alert him to her worries. But when she tells him the company might be “f**ked,” all Robert has in response is a laugh and a “What else is new?”

Harper and Petra attend discussions aiming to identify banks holding distressed debt and its specifics. They devise a tactic to coerce one bank into revealing their list, but Harper grows upset upon discovering that Petra had arranged a meeting with Pierpoint through Yasmin without informing her. In a heated exchange, Harper questions whether Petra might have an addiction issue, alluding to James’ comment about rehab. Taken aback, Petra clarifies that she encountered James in the lobby of a rehabilitation center while dropping off her child.

Harper suggests they both open up more to each other, but Petra quickly disagrees, stating that they are strictly professional coworkers.

Eric creeps out Yasmin

Eric and Yasmin step out for a midday meal, with Eric opting for an alcoholic beverage despite feeling under the weather. Yasmin abstains from drinking. Eric confesses to being hungover from the previous night and shares his struggles at home, while Yasmin inquires about Pierpoint’s wellbeing, hinting that Sweetpea discovered something concerning. However, Eric waves off her concerns, claiming Sweetpea is uninformed, before shifting the conversation topic.

In a different phrasing: Eric asks Henry about their past, but Yasmin is interrupted by Denise on a call, revealing that Charles’ autopsy pictures have been made public. After ending the call, Yasmin becomes uncomfortable as Eric talks about desires, leading her to shout and depart. Before exiting the restaurant, Eric indulges in a private moment in the restroom.

At the desk, Yasmin invites Eric to a meeting with Harper and Petra, but he seems uninterested. During this gathering, another Pierpoint employee enters with curiosity about why a hedge fund would focus on distressed credit, even appearing suspicious. However, Yasmin takes charge and suggests they simply sell the distressed credit assets to Harper and Petra without further inquiries. Harper requests the list, which is provided to her. It seems Yasmin might not fully understand the implications of her actions.

Time to take down Pierpoint

After that, Harper and Petra stop by a crucial bank in their strategy, sitting down with their previous colleagues, Daria, Kenny, and Jackie, for a discussion. They propose an idea to them: trading distressed debt from Pierpoint. If this scheme succeeds, Harper and Petra would acquire the debt at a reduced price and later resell it when its value increases. Naturally, Daria, Kenny, and Jackie have personal motivations for wanting to undermine Pierpoint due to their past with the company, and Harper and Petra are aware of this fact.

At Pierpoint, Yasmin shares with Eric the details of their recent meeting, mentioning that Harper and herself think their debt is undervalued and will eventually resolve itself naturally. Taken aback by this revelation, Eric struggles to comprehend Yasmin’s actions, and she clarifies that she provided them with a list. Unable to process the situation, Eric promptly exits and heads straight to Harper’s office to confront her. Upon finding her at work, he expresses his concern that Harper’s actions will cause significant harm to many people, including Yasmin.

Harper points out to Eric that he’s been acting inconsistently because his belief has always been that people are tools for gaining something, yet he’s upset now when she’s doing the same thing. Meanwhile, Petra listens in from another room as Harper and Eric exchange harsh words, causing Eric to leave angrily.

Eric returns to the office to find everyone gone for the evening, and when he looks at his screen he sees Pierpoint’s share price is starting to go down. And it begins! He calls Yasmin and fires her, telling her that Harper screwed her over. While getting fired, paparazzi continually snap photos of Yasmin and she eventually grabs their camera and throws it. Eric calls Adler and tells him he better be on his way to London.

Harper and Yasmin’s big fight

In a turn of events, Harper arrives home to find Yasmin in the kitchen, who questions Harper about her actions that day on the boat when she shielded her. Harper responds by stating it was simply an act of kindness, to which Yasmin reveals the individual on the boat had feelings for her. However, this isn’t the same person Yasmin is confronting now. Harper admits her affection for Yasmin, but that doesn’t sit well with Yasmin, who lashes out at Harper. “Your pain was beneficial to you,” Yasmin accuses. Harper justifies her actions by explaining it’s just the nature of their profession. The scene escalates as both characters engage in a heated argument, trading harsh words and jabs about their past relationships with Robert.

In simpler terms, Harper repeats Charles’ harsh words by calling Yasmin “talentless,” “useless,” and using a derogatory term for a woman, intentionally hurting her feelings again. This action triggers Yasmin who retaliates by slapping Harper, to which Harper responds with another slap. After this altercation, Harper walks away.

In the last scene of the episode, we revisit the boat once more, a location familiar from earlier, but this time with a deeper understanding of what’s happening. We witness the partygoer taking pictures of Yasmin, while the deckhand attempts to make amends with her. Once they are left alone, Yasmin and Harper tip some champagne over the boat, aware that it’s highly probable that Charles has met his end.

Marisa Abela and Myha’la shine brilliantly in tonight’s episode of “Industry”; I was sorry to have missed their captivating plotlines! This series doesn’t shy away from being intense, and the title “Nikki Beach, or: So Many Ways to Lose” showcases that well. Let’s move on to the second-to-last episode of “Industry” season 3, which airs next Sunday, Sept. 22. The final episode of the season is scheduled for Sept. 29.
