Individual Brilliance saves FaZe as ropz and rain secure Shanghai Major Playoffs
As a long-time fan of CS:GO and particularly of FaZe Clan, I must admit that their journey at the Shanghai Major has been quite the rollercoaster ride. From barely scraping past Wildcard to narrowly clinching a playoffs spot against Furia, it’s been an unpredictable run filled with both highs and lows.
FaZe eek out a playoffs spot at the Shanghai Major with Furia win.
Following an exhilarating competition, team FaZe narrowly secured a spot in the Major Playoffs at Shanghai. At first, it seemed like Furia was dominating the series, but when elimination loomed, FaZe’s individual players suddenly found their stride for a remarkable comeback. With their place in the playoffs confirmed, the question now is: Can FaZe find their footing and perform consistently?
An unconvincing run to playoffs from FaZe
FaZe might have made it to the playoffs, but their performance at the Shanghai Major has not instilled much confidence in fans. In their first match, they faced Wildcard, a team often regarded as one of the weakest among the top 16. Some spectators anticipated an upset. However, thanks to rain’s impressive performance with a rating of 1.98, FaZe managed to secure a close win by 13-10.
FaZe Clan experienced fluctuations throughout their Best-of-One matches, losing to Heroic but overcoming MOUZ to advance into the 2-1 round. However, in the Best-of-Three series, they were dominated by G2. The map Inferno had previously been a challenge for them, and this issue resurfaced during their match against Furia. Yet, the more surprising setback was the apparent lack of offensive prowess displayed by FaZe’s individual players.
Furia seamlessly resumed G2’s dominant performance, securing a 13-6 victory on Inferno. However, when facing elimination, FaZe displayed resilience. On Inferno, it was David “frozen” Čerňanský carrying the team, but on Dust2, rain stepped forward. Defensively, the Norwegian played a pivotal role in matching FaZe with their Brazilian counterparts, providing enough time for Robin “ropz” Kool to regain strength.
2024 saw ropz symbolize FaZe’s challenges. From being an exceptional player in the early months of CS2, he experienced a significant decline in recent times. However, his return to top form was vital for lifting both FaZe’s server performance and morale. With the Estonian terminator causing havoc for Furia, FaZe managed to maintain this improved form until they reached a series point on Mirage. At 12-2, victory was almost guaranteed.
I’ve gotta give a shoutout to Furia; they didn’t back down one bit. Each of their players stepped up big-time. FalleN called an exceptional T-side, while kscerato and skullz filled the voids perfectly when situations got tricky. Sadly, we couldn’t catch up to FaZe’s headstart, but they sure knew how to make the most of the chaos, ultimately claiming victory.
“We don’t have a comfort map” – FaZe Karrigan
Regarding FaZe’s future, there’s still a cloud of uncertainty looming. In a candid post-match interview, karrigan admitted to the team’s difficulties. One of their most significant issues is not having a preferred map that gives them comfort. So far, they’ve chosen Inferno twice, but both times, they’ve been defeated by their opponents. Facing Vitality in the Quarter-finals with a 0-1 deficit, it seems nearly impossible to mount a comeback.
For FaZe to progress beyond the playoffs, they’ll need an extraordinarily powerful boost in the Arena – something truly remarkable. Otherwise, it seems likely that they’ll be knocked out in the Quarter-finals, sparking speculation about potential changes within their roster. Is this the end of the road for the current FaZe team?
