Incredibles 3 SHOCK: Original Director OUT! You Won’t Believe Why!
Instead of the original director who kickstarted the franchise in its initial release, Pixar has appointed a new director for their upcoming major sequel. Notably, Pixar is currently developing several high-profile sequels, with strong indications of both Toy Story 5 and Inside Out 3. However, among the eagerly awaited films on their schedule is a third Incredibles movie, titled The Incredibles 3.
It has been disclosed that Brad Bird, who was initially slated to direct, will not be at the helm for the upcoming “Incredibles 3”. Although he penned and directed the first two “Incredibles” movies, his schedule appears to be filled with other commitments, making it impossible for him to take charge once more in the upcoming animated sequel.
Initially, The Hollywood Reporter announced that Peter Sohn, director of the film “Elemental,” is now leading the upcoming “Incredibles” movie, while Bird continues with writing and producing duties for “The Incredibles 3.” However, Bird will no longer be the director for the new project, instead allowing Sohn to take charge when it comes to directing.
As a devoted cinema enthusiast, I recall with excitement the official announcement made at D23 in August 2024, confirming that The Incredibles 3 was underway. At the time, it was revealed that Brad Bird was working on this project, which to me suggested that he was scripting the movie but might not be closely involved in its day-to-day production as he had been before.
For over two decades, Peter Sohn has been a dedicated employee at Pixar Animation Studios, contributing to the art and story departments of blockbuster animated films such as “Finding Nemo,” “The Incredibles,” and “Up.” In 2015, Pixar made its first foray into feature-length directing with “The Good Dinosaur.” Fast forward almost a decade, Sohn directed the Academy Award-nominated film “Elemental” in 2023.
Information about the cast details for “The Incredibles 3” hasn’t been revealed yet. However, it’s likely that many of the original voice actors will return for another round, such as Holly Hunter as Elastigirl, Craig T. Nelson as Mr. Incredible, and Samuel L. Jackson as Frozone. As for the release date, nothing has been confirmed since the movie appears to still be in its early stages of development.
Why Is Brad Bird Not Directing The Incredibles 3?
Undoubtedly, the primary curiosity arising from this recent announcement among devoted Incredibles enthusiasts is: Why is Pixar replacing the beloved director in their forthcoming third installment of the animated superhero series?
Most probably, it wasn’t up to Pixar; instead, Brad Bird might have been the one who decided whether to direct The Incredibles 3, or not.
It’s important to mention that while Bird won’t be the director for the upcoming movie, he is still contributing to it significantly. He has written the script and will take on a producing role, overseeing the filmmaking process from a distance, rather than being directly involved in its daily production.
The main cause for the bird not accepting the directing role in the upcoming threequel seems to be because of his ongoing projects at the moment.
At present, Bird currently has two significant works in progress: “Ray Gunn,” a film he’s working on with Skydance and Netflix, and “1906,” a live-action Disney movie helmed by an acclaimed director.
Ray Gunn, specifically, has been a cherished endeavor for the filmmaker. For almost three decades, Bird has tirelessly pursued bringing this project to life. Therefore, when Netflix stepped in with a $150 million production budget to bring his heartfelt project to fruition, it’s understandable that he would agree and let someone else create the next Incredibles without him.
It appears that Ray Gunn is allegedly slated for a 2026 launch on a specific platform, prompting the filmmaker to move onto his next venture, titled 1906. Interestingly, this project is currently under development at Disney, as you can discover more about their upcoming lineup here.
