Inbetweeners star James Buckley reveals his ONE secret to a happy marriage with wife Clair after over a decade of marriage and two children

James Buckley says the key to his successful marriage with his wife, Clair, after more than ten years together is a simple secret he’s now shared.

James Buckley, known for his role as Jay Cartwright in The Inbetweeners, has been married to Clair since 2012. They have two sons together.

James and Claire recently revealed the one key to maintaining a strong marriage over the years.

The pair said how ‘sharing the load’ between each other is the key to a long-lasting union.

Clair explained: ‘The four most important words in any marriage are “I’ll do the dishes”.’

She explained that a loving partnership means sharing responsibilities. While James sometimes needs a little encouragement – he’s happy to take out the trash, for example – they manage to balance things and make it work as a couple.

James and model Clair share son Harrison, 11, and nine-year-old Jude.

The couple have a YouTube show, and James has reportedly earned over £1 million from the Cameo app, where celebrities record personalized messages.

While promoting the Philips 4000 Series Dual Basket Airfryer, James and Clair also shared that strong relationships are built on friendship, shared laughter, and prioritizing quality time together, like having dedicated Friday nights.

I was really surprised to hear them talk about it, but they shared that their marriage nearly fell apart because of a disagreement over some lingerie! It was so honest and candid, and I couldn’t believe they were willing to admit something so personal.

They revealed they had a row after a pair of women’s pants ended up in his washing cycle.

Clair said she found something while unloading her husband’s laundry that upset her, so she rushed upstairs to talk to him about it.

James recalled that your sister had recently visited and used their washing machine. When he saw her and another woman, he playfully said, “They’re obviously your sisters!” He added that they were dressed quite attractively—all in silk and bows—which made him a little uncomfortable, as he didn’t want to imply anything about your sister.

Okay, so when they asked about the underwear, I immediately told them they weren’t mine! I swear, I’d never even seen them before. It’s just… my sister and I are practically twins, and our mom buys us both the same underwear every Christmas, so it’s totally easy to get mixed up, you know? It’s not a big deal, honestly, but everyone’s making it one!

James, clearly upset, acknowledged things didn’t look good, but he couldn’t explain what happened, which made Clair angrily leave the room.

James admitted he was convinced his marriage was over, thinking, “This is it.” He imagined his wife divorcing him and being haunted forever by the question of where she got a particular pair of pants.

Those twenty minutes were truly special – I imagined myself as an old man, amazed and confused by something unexpected happening in my life.

Clair shared that after a nerve-wracking ten minutes, her sister finally replied to her message about a pair of pants, confessing she almost forgot James! James playfully agreed, saying she definitely would have.

‘If there was no explanation she’s got to leave me, she’d be insane if she didn’t.’

James recently shared that he isn’t very motivated to continue acting, revealing his feelings about his career earlier this year.

The actor, best known for playing Jay Cartwright in the popular E4 sitcom The Inbetweeners in the late 2000s, has said he’s not actively seeking out new acting jobs.

James shared on James Martin’s Saturday Kitchen that his favorite pastime is simply being at home.

He mentioned he has a movie scheduled for release sometime next year, titled Mother’s Pride. He recently finished filming it with Martin Clunes and said it was a really enjoyable experience.

I’m not really striving to be an actor, and honestly, I’m not a very ambitious person. What I enjoy most is simply being at home, surrounded by the people and things I love.
