The new Netflix movie, In Your Dreams, has a few genuinely funny scenes. One of them led to me getting The Pussycat Dolls‘ song “Don’t Cha” stuck in my head! I definitely didn’t expect to hear that 2005 hit while watching an animated film. But after learning some behind-the-scenes details from TopMob, I appreciate that moment even more.
CB spoke with Alex Woo, the writer and director of In Your Dreams, about a memorable scene in the movie featuring animatronic characters singing the line, “Don’t cha wish your pizza was hot like me?” Woo explained that this song wasn’t their original idea, but once they chose it, they faced a few challenges getting it into the film.
It took a lot of searching, but when we finally chose ‘Don’t Cha’ for that scene, everyone immediately loved it. We knew it was perfect and had to use it. We worked with our music supervisor, Chris Duras, who contacted the Pussycat Dolls and the rights holders. Thankfully, they were enthusiastic about it and gave us the go-ahead.
I’ve been so impressed watching Woo’s work! After a fantastic run at Pixar, he decided to create his own animated films with Kuku Studios back in 2016, and his first feature, In Your Dreams, is really something special. It dives into some really meaningful themes about families, but it’s not all serious – it’s genuinely funny too, with moments like the hilarious “Don’t Cha” scene. It’s a beautiful blend of heart and humor!
The pizzeria band performance is fantastic, and cleverly censoring a lyric is a brilliant detail. However, what Simu Liu told us during our conversation with him and Cristin Milioti was even more amusing: he revealed a story about another song that almost made the cut. As Liu explained:
We tried out several songs during auditions, and I remember for a while we were even considering a song called ‘Sweet Dreams Are Made Of Cheese’.
The wordplay in this scene is fantastic – the filmmakers really showed some creativity with this little moment in In Your Dreams. Apparently, they considered using the Eurythmics’ “Sweet Dreams (Are Made Of This),” but ultimately chose a humorous, pizza-themed cover of “Don’t Cha.” I think the Pussycat Dolls’ song was the stronger choice of the two, and definitely less corny. It’s just fun to imagine the filmmakers brainstorming popular songs that could be combined with a cheese-related joke.

The In Your Dreams Ending Twist Meant A Lot To Me, And The Director Told Me The Story Behind It
It’s amusing to think that a new generation will discover this early 2000s song through this Netflix movie – what a great way to introduce it to them! The song plays during a sweet moment when siblings Stevie and Elliot learn about the Sandman and try to make their biggest wish come true: to stop their parents from separating, as their family is going through a difficult time and might have to move.
Movies often include fun references to popular culture, and the film In Your Dreams is a great example with its use of the song “Don’t Cha.” Check it out and also look forward to more exciting titles coming to Netflix by the end of 2025!
