In ‘Suits LA,’ John Amos gets his flowers — and a moving episode inspired by his legacy
NBC’s “Suits LA” bid a heartfelt goodbye to the beloved actor John Amos, who passed away several months ago in the summer.
In a heartfelt tribute on Sunday, the spinoff of “Suits” honored the late, multi-talented actor who was renowned for his work in “Coming to America” and “Roots”. In one of his last roles before his passing in August, Amos made a guest appearance on “Suits LA”, portraying a character reminiscent of himself.
In the most recent installment, entitled “Good Times,” which was reminiscent of Amos’ well-known 1970s sitcom, lawyers Ted (played by Stephen Amell) and Rick (portrayed by Bryan Greenberg) come together to honor the life of their late client and friend, Amos, who passed away off-camera.

John Amos, the actor who portrayed James Evans Sr. on ‘Good Times’ and adult Kunta Kinte on ‘Roots,’ as well as Cleo McDowell in ‘Coming to America,’ has sadly passed away at 84 years old.
In his tribute to Amos, whom he called “America’s father,” Ted said, “He’s left us, but he’s still mending our pieces.
After an enjoyable evening filled with rounds at Musso & Frank Grill, Ted and I found ourselves reflecting upon our late friend Amos, who despite his significant contributions, never received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Inspired, we reached out to a trusted contact sitting on the board, aiming to initiate the posthumous recognition he so rightly deserved.
As a cinema enthusiast, I couldn’t help but express my frustration when I learned it would take at least two years before the landmark became a reality. Addressing the board member who seemed to have overlooked Amos’ career, I exclaimed, “This man is more than just a figurehead! He’s a legend in our world, an icon!
Speaking as a devoted admirer, I’d say, “John Amos was a TV pioneer, much like Sidney Poitier on the big screen. He paved the way for Black America and became a guiding influence for all of America. Frankly, he should have been honored with a star long ago, and if one can’t appreciate that, then they’re in the wrong line of work.

The creator of the “Suits” series emphasizes that his primary focus is on achieving the standards he’s set for himself and “Suits LA,” rather than paying attention to what others might be thinking or expecting.
Following the heated post-lunch discussion, Rick tells Ted that Amos will indeed receive his star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame – although this event is yet a couple of years away. Moved by this news and worried about Amos fading from memory, Ted shares with Rick the last conversation he had with the beloved “Roots” actor before his passing.
Towards the conclusion of the show, Ted and Rick individually seek solace by revisiting Amos in a more immediate way – by watching an episode of “Good Times”. At this emotional moment, Ted along with private investigator Kevin (Troy Winbush), Rick, and lawyer Erica sat down to watch the sitcom, their eyes brimming with tears.
In the “Good Times” episode titled “The Gang: Part 2,” Amos gave an impactful portrayal of James Evans, the character known for his tough love. The episode that aired on Sunday concluded with a heartfelt tribute: “In memory of John Amos.
On August 21, 2024, Amos passed away due to natural causes; however, his demise wasn’t publicly announced until October. At the time of his passing, he was 84 years old.
Known as a versatile talent, this individual was not only an accomplished actor but also a successful former football player and scriptwriter for television shows like “The Mary Tyler Moore Show,” “The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air,” and “The West Wing.
