In Rare Revolt, Girl Group NewJeans Accuses Major K-Pop Label, Hybe, of Discrimination
As a longtime fan of K-pop and NewJeans in particular, I find myself deeply moved by the group’s recent stand against Hybe Co. Their courage to demand justice and fairness is truly inspiring. Having followed their journey since their debut, I can attest that their success did not come easy – it was born out of hard work, dedication, and the guidance of their beloved producer.
As a die-hard cinema enthusiast, I’m expressing my support for the K-pop sensation NewJeans who recently took a bold stand on YouTube. They’ve called out Hybe Co. to reconsider their decision and reappoint their long-standing producer by September 25th. This move adds fuel to an ongoing dispute and has sent shockwaves through an entertainment industry that is predominantly ruled by a few influential management giants.
As a passionate moviegoer putting this into my own words, here’s how I might rephrase it:
Hybe didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment.
The strong stance taken by NewJeans implies a growing dissatisfaction with their management company. This announcement follows Hybe’s instruction for Min Hee-jin to resign as CEO in August, and her subsequent task of working on the group’s album within two months. However, Hybe’s actions contradict an earlier court ruling that prohibited Hybe from removing Min as head of sister label ADOR, which is responsible for producing NewJeans, as stated by Min’s legal representative.
In her closing remarks during the video, NewJeans’ Minji expressed that if our message was accurately received, she expresses hope that Chairman Bang Si-Hyuk and Hybe will exercise good judgment in returning ADOR back to its original form by the 25th.
Since the conflict between Min and the company at Hybe emerged in mid-April, there has been a significant drop in Hybe’s market value by approximately 27%. This drop can be attributed to an internal power struggle within the company. The dispute led Hybe to initiate an investigation into Min’s actions, alleging that she was attempting to take control of ADOR. The disagreement escalated and ended up in court, where the judge decided that the producer should continue leading her sister label.
Hanni expressed a wish for the ongoing legal issue to be settled, allowing us to restore our workplace to its previous peaceful state.
