In Just 1 Day, HBO’s Easy-to-Binge Series Becomes One of the Most Watched Shows in the World

For decades, HBO has set the standard for quality TV, and they did it again in 2025 with a compelling new medical drama. The show was highly praised by critics and recently started its second season.

Just a day after premiering on HBO Max, The Pitt quickly became a major streaming hit, according to FlixPatrol. The show returned on January 8th, almost a year after its initial release on January 9, 2025. This new season will consist of 15 episodes.

The Pitt quickly became popular around the world, surpassing both It: Welcome to Derry and the documentary The Cult Behind the Killer: The Andrea Yates Story, which had been number one the day before. It immediately reached the top spot in 59 countries, including the United States.

The first season was a huge hit, winning five Primetime Emmy Awards, including honors for Best Drama, Best Actor, and Best Supporting Actress. Critics loved it too, giving it a 95% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, while audiences gave it an 87% approval score. Many consider it a successor to the popular show ER.

Season 2 showed that a show can be both high-quality and have a lot of episodes. Unlike many popular shows that take years to return with just a few new installments, The Pitt is coming back with a full 15-episode season.

The latest season has been very well-received, earning a 99% approval rating based on 63 critic reviews. While an official audience score isn’t available yet, initial reactions from viewers are positive. It will take time for the audience to settle on a final rating as the season progresses.

The Pitt Will Return for Season 3

Just before the premiere of The Pitt on January 8th, HBO officially announced it was renewing the show for a second season. The announcement was made at the Season 2 premiere event in Los Angeles. Given the huge success of the first season, the renewal wasn’t unexpected. The series has also…

Season 2 of the show picks up around the Fourth of July, following the events of Season 1 which began around Labor Day. Many familiar faces return, including Noah Wyle as Dr. Robby Robinavitch, along with Tracy Ifeachor, Patrick Ball, Katherine LaNasa, Supriya Ganesh, Fiona Dourif, Taylor Dearden, Isa Briones, Gerran Howell, and Shabana Azeez. Joining them this season is Sepideh Moafi as Dr. Al-Hashimi.

The first season was a big success, so the studio decided to create future seasons with over 15 episodes each, while also aiming for a lower budget and yearly releases. They plan to use this approach – similar to what they did with The Pitt – for two new shows: the police drama American Blue and the family drama How to Survive Without Me.

New episodes of The Pitt premiere on HBO every Thursday at 9 pm ET.
