IMT Castle: “[Solo queue] is the worst part [of being in NA]”
As a seasoned gamer with a global gaming background, I can genuinely say that my time in Los Angeles with Immortals has been nothing short of exhilarating. The environment, the vibe, and the weather here are just perfect for me. However, there’s one aspect of North America that I could do without – high elo solo queue. It’s like stepping into a random game of League of Legends with your friends when you least expect it. But hey, even a pro gamer needs a break from the grind sometimes, right?
Immortals’ top laner talks about everything from solo queue to Swarm with esports.gg.
Following their defeat at the hands of Team Liquid, we had a chat with Castle (Cho “Castle” Hyeon-seong), Immortals’ top laner.
After Team Liquid defeated his team 0-2 during the LCS 2024 Summer Split regular season, we had an individual conversation with Castle. From his affection for Swarm to his dislike of NA solo queue, a variety of topics were discussed.
Immortals Castle has hope for playoffs
So, what are your thoughts on the series, Castle? You certainly faced a challenging opponent in Team Liquid. But given that, how has the outcome left you feeling?
“Castle: Clearly, they were too strong for us. Despite the game being winnable, we made several personal errors that were unforgivable. It was disappointing, indeed.”
How is the team feeling looking ahead to playoffs and the rest of the split?
As someone who has been a part of several competitive teams in the past, I firmly believe that we still have a chance to make it to the playoffs this season. We understand the importance of each game and will be giving our all to ensure we qualify. Our ultimate goal is not just to make it to the playoffs, but to aim higher if the opportunity arises. At present, our focus is solely on securing a spot in the playoffs. With our combined experience, determination, and team spirit, I am optimistic that we can turn things around and make our mark this season. Let’s give it everything we’ve got!
More generally, how are you enjoying your time in Los Angeles? How’s North America treating you?
It strikes me as just right for my preferences. I’m really fond of this place. The ambiance, the atmosphere, the climate, everything feels just right for me. I’m truly enjoying myself here, indeed.

Castle says solo queue is the worst part of NA
We have to ask, since it’s so infamous — is NA high elo solo queue truly as bad as people say?
“Upon your suggestion, I must admit it’s the most challenging aspect. Indeed, [playing solo queue] is the toughest part about being a pro player in NA.”
What makes it so bad? You’ve played in Korean high elo before. Why is NA solo queue so intolerable?
In South Korea, high-ranking solo queue games function as additional practice sessions for professional players. They engage in these matches to hone their skills and collaborate with one another. Essentially, it’s a competition between professionals playing against other professionals, resembling a training session or scrimmage. Conversely, when you watch streamers play solo queue, the character selection tends to be more random.
We had a conversation with the coach from Fnatic and G2’s player Mikyx today, discussing the evolution of the mid-season game style. I’d like to know your thoughts on the ongoing trend of dual AD and AP junglers.
As a long-time League of Legends player with countless hours logged in the jungle, I’ve noticed that Riot is currently working on patches concerning double AD carry compositions. Frankly, these comps are too powerful and have become a staple for many teams. It’s not just about their strength; it’s about how they dominate the game from early to late stages.
Are there any top laners you’re particularly looking forward to playing?
“I’m about to play against Dignitas for the first time. They have Licorice on their team, who was the top laner of the year last season, as far as I know.”

Off the topic of pro play, have you tried out Swarm?
“Yeah! Yeah, I actually enjoy it a lot. It’s fun to play, I like it a lot.”
Any words for IMT fans about these last few matches?
In our previous round, we failed to qualify for the playoffs. This time around, we’re aiming to do so. We’re giving it our all and striving for nothing less than a playoff spot. If we manage that, we aspire to reach even higher levels of success. We’re putting in our best efforts.
Lastly, a fresh titleholder has emerged on the active servers. As we await her entrance into professional play, what’s your take on Aurora?
“I can just say one word — OP. Aurora’s ult for the enemy is like, ‘just kill us.’”
