The Brazilian thriller State of Fear is a hit with viewers around the globe. It was the most-watched movie on Netflix worldwide this past weekend and is currently number one in several countries, including Brazil, Poland, and Portugal, according to FlixPatrol.
The film is currently a top 10 hit in the UK, ranking as the tenth most-watched movie today. However, it’s just outside the top 10 in the US.
The movie, originally titled Salve Geral: Irmandade, is set in São Paulo and depicts a full-scale war between a powerful criminal organization and a corrupt police force.

With everything falling apart, the gang leader’s daughter is taken hostage, and her aunt must risk it all to save her. Can she protect her niece while trapped in a dangerous warzone?
This thriller movie continues the story from the popular Brazilian Netflix series Irmandade, which is called Brotherhood in English. The series originally aired for two seasons from 2019 to 2022.

However, viewers on IMDb rated the film lower, giving it an average score of 4.7 out of 10 as of this writing.
Critics seem more enamoured with it though, with Decider writing: “State of Fear is as intense an action film as you’re likely to see all year.”
The film features several impressively crafted and suspenseful scenes, showcasing the director’s skill with lengthy, fluid shots that make full use of the environment. Pedro Morelli expertly builds and maintains tension throughout, enhanced by careful sound design and deliberate camera movements.

The San Jose Mercury News noted that it’s rare for a film to be truly captivating and leave you speechless.
You don’t need to watch the previous two seasons to enjoy this film, but it might enhance your experience. Even if you’re new to the series, the movie is well-made and should appeal to those who like intense crime thrillers, especially films like Martin Scorsese’s The Departed.
State of Fear and Brotherhood can be streamed on Netflix now.
