Summary
- Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey IMAX 70mm tickets are 95% sold, a year before release
- High demand, driven by Nolan’s reputation and the film’s format, has led to scalping
- The movie, shot entirely on IMAX cameras, premieres July 17, 2026
Nearly all tickets for Christopher Nolan’s upcoming IMAX 70mm film, titled The Odyssey, have already been snapped up – however, the film is not set to hit theaters for another twelve months.
According to an insider source, most of the ticket sales occurred during the initial hour they became available. The fortunate few managed to get them at their original price, but those who missed out might need to resort to buying from scalpers on eBay, where tickets are being sold for more than $200 USD.
On a Sunday night, a ticket for Cinemark in Dallas, positioned to your left in the second row, is now being sold at a price quadruple its original cost. Simultaneously, four tickets for Saturday shows at AMC Lincoln Square in New York City were put up for auction, with an initial bid set at $1,000 USD.
It isn’t just the reputation of director Christopher Nolan that drives ticket demand; viewers are also keen to witness his work as he intended, in the immersive IMAX 70mm format. Notably, “The Odyssey” will be the first studio film ever captured entirely using IMAX cameras.
Paul Dergarabedian, a senior media analyst at Comscore, finds it daring, impressive, and audacious when it comes to advanced ticket sales. However, only someone as esteemed as Nolan could manage such a feat. He’s more than just a filmmaker; he’s a recognizable brand. If other directors attempted this, they might face skepticism.
According to Shawn Robbins, the unique ticketing approach is drawing significant pre-release interest to the film. By doing something novel, it adds an element of excitement and makes the movie feel more like a special event.
In a fresh take on Homer’s timeless Greek epic, The Odyssey is set to assemble an illustrious ensemble of actors. Matt Damon assumes the role of Odysseus, the revered king of Ithaca, with Tom Holland stepping into the shoes of his son, Telemachus. Joining these two are a host of talented stars including Anne Hathaway, Zendaya, Lupita Nyong’o, Robert Pattinson, Charlize Theron, Jon Bernthal, Benny Safdie, John Leguizamo, Elliot Page and many others.
The Odyssey hits theaters July 17, 2026.
