I’m Old and Resistant to Change

Beware! The following information may reveal the end of ‘The Conners‘ series if you haven’t seen it on ABC or with a Hulu membership yet.

Following a span of seven seasons for “The Conners”, a series that continued the storyline initiated by ten seasons of “Roseanne”, the longest-running non-animated TV family on network television has bid farewell and closed its doors, at least for now. The passage of time seems to have gone quickly for those involved in producing the show, as well as viewers like us, and John Goodman, the longtime series patriarch, believes it will take some time to adjust to the sitcom’s absence.

The last two episodes of “The Conners” aired on ABC on April 23. These episodes humorously concluded the storyline where Dan and his family fought against Big Pharma after Roseanne overdosed on pain medication. In the end, they received $700 for their emotional struggles instead of the imagined lottery winnings in the original sitcom. The characters’ stories ended up more or less back at square one, but this time on a slightly happier note.

1. Lecy Goranson discussed her experience working alongside John Goodman in what she thought was the toughest fight between Dan and Becky for The Conners.

2. Lecy Goranson shared insights on how Roseanne’s death was revisited during the final season of The Conners.

3. Here are 10 characters from Roseanne that I hope to see again in The Conners.

John Goodman talked about Dan Conner taking off his proverbial hat (a hat similar to a well-known beer company’s trucker cap), and he was taken aback by how fast the seven seasons of this spinoff went by for him.

It’s quite challenging… I’ll certainly feel its absence for some time. I must admit, I’m not particularly fond of adjusting to new situations…

…But isn’t it thrilling how swiftly the good times seem to pass? It feels like just yesterday when we accomplished this, doesn’t it?

Remarkably, Goodman isn’t just leaving one cherished TV character behind this year; he’s bidding farewell to two as he has two shows concluding in 2025. Notably, he plays the Bible-thumping patriarch in HBO’s The Righteous Gemstones, which is winding up its four-season run in the near future. However, the emotional dynamics he encounters on ABC’s sitcom are unlike any he experiences within Danny McBride’s realm.

Goodman also explained what he believes has kept “The Conners” popular among viewers for many years, stating:

As a movie enthusiast, I find myself drawn to stories that revolve around ordinary families grappling with extraordinary circumstances – much like many of us in this nation who have faced challenging times for an extended period.

In a natural and easy-to-read manner: The TV series The Conners could appear at various points in contemporary history and still resonate with a significant portion of the audience. This observation can be seen as either praise for the show’s creative team or criticism of society, but it’s not the time to delve into that debate now.

Dan’s Parting Words Were Such Sweet Anti-Sorrow

Expressing my sympathy for the absence of Dan Conner’s relatable portrayal of family heads, his poignant perspective on their predicament in the here and now is a truth that resonates widely, making it all the more disheartening that we won’t be privy to any more middle-class insights from him in the 2025 TV lineup.

Reflecting on these experiences stirs a realization within me: Despite the challenges life presents, it’s important to take a moment and observe our surroundings. For when we stand united, there’s no obstacle too great for us to overcome.

It’s hard to hang together when you’re not on my TV anymore, Dan! I mean really.

Dan’s Reality-Breaking Goodbye Wasn’t Originally Planned

As a passionate film aficionado, one scene in the last episode of “Conners” truly took me aback – it was during the third act, just before the poignant flashbacks leading up to the final credits. After the heartrending goodbyes from Becky, Jackie, Darlene, and others, Dan (played brilliantly by John Goodman) gazed straight into the camera, offering a heartfelt farewell that not only shattered the fourth wall but also left pieces of my TV-devoted heart scattered on the floor.

It was unexpected, given its impactful nature, but this element wasn’t initially planned for the final scene in the script. However, Executive Producer Bruce Rasmussen shared with Variety that this personal touch was actually suggested by John Goodman himself. In his own words:

The unexpected action took us by surprise. You know, sort of like, “Wow, that was great!” It was just one of those powerful moments, so after that, we recorded other scenes, discussing if we should air the one that had such a strong impact. John decided to use it, and we were thrilled with his choice.

It’s uncertain right now if any of the Conner family will reappear on our screens to face fresh financial challenges in the future, but I can only wish they do. Whether we get to track Emma Kenney’s Harris and her romantic complications, or keep up with Lecy Goranson’s Becky as she juggles motherhood with Beverly Rose and maintains her sobriety, or [insert another scenario], this family has a knack for providing laughter.
