I’m Just Now Realizing Something About Star Trek’s Latest Announcements That Has Me Concerned

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds is now consistently airing every week on the 2025 TV schedule, which brings a sense of familiarity as if the franchise has returned to its usual spot. Consequently, my defenses were lowered at San Diego Comic-Con, eager to discover upcoming novelties and catch a sneak peek into what lies ahead.

It wasn’t until recently that I realized there was another point I overlooked when discussing future offerings from the Star Trek franchise with our Paramount+ subscription – this year seems less exciting for new Trek content compared to previous years, which has left me somewhat worried about the state of upcoming releases.

Star Trek Ended San Diego Comic-Con Without Any Announcements About New Shows Or Updates On Its Movies

I’ve finally had some time to reminisce about my experience at San Diego Comic-Con, particularly the Star Trek Hall H panel. For those who may have missed out on the key updates from that event, it was announced that Season 4 of Strange New Worlds will include a “puppet episode,” a trailer for the Khan podcast series was unveiled, and the official trailer for Starfleet Academy was released.

I should clarify that while I’m excited about the new Star Trek shows, especially Strange New Worlds, it’s more accurate to refer to them as “show.” It’s worth noting that Strange New Worlds has a confirmed end date, so what we’re primarily anticipating is the start of Starfleet Academy. For quite some time now, there haven’t been numerous Trek shows in development, or at least not ones we’re aware of.

Star Trek Las Vegas Featured Stories From Stars About Pitched Shows That Never Came To Be

At Star Trek Las Vegas, while significant updates on upcoming shows aren’t usually the norm, this year did bring some unexpected announcements.

For instance, the showrunner of Picard, Terry Matalas, disclosed he has drafted a script for his potential subsequent series. Moreover, Scott Bakula hinted at proposing an Enterprise spin-off to Paramount. Tawny Newsome added that she has completed writing her live-action comedy series and is currently awaiting word from Paramount regarding its production.

The main similarity here is that none of these ideas have moved beyond being proposals, waiting for Paramount’s attention. It seems that the era of pitching to streaming platforms and instantly getting a series order may be over. However, it’s hard not to observe a decrease in activity within the franchise, and considering one significant upcoming event, it doesn’t feel like a mere coincidence.

Why 2026 Could Signal A Changing Of The Guard For The Franchise

Paramount is treading carefully when it comes to Star Trek, and there are probably several factors contributing to this situation. One significant factor is the delay in finalizing their merger with Skydance due to a legal dispute involving President Trump. This hold-up has affected the financial flow, which may explain why new shows haven’t been announced yet.

Star Trek encounters a significant hurdle in its film series that I believe it needs to address for continued success, which could be rephrased as follows:

However, one could also argue that South Park, which has consistently taken jabs at the president while being produced under Paramount’s umbrella, might not support this theory.

Even though it’s difficult to predict, it’s intriguing to consider what this decision might imply for Star Trek. This series is deeply grounded in IDIC (Infinite Diversity Infinite Combinations). When Skydance announced they would discontinue all DEI (Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion) initiatives previously implemented at Paramount, it’s natural to have concerns about the emphasis on diversity in the future leadership. Veteran Star Trek actor Robert Picardo has expressed that he’s not worried about the franchise altering its core values under new management, but can he truly foresee this?

Moving forward, it’s important to note that Alex Kurtzman’s current contract with CBS Studios is due to expire in 2026. While his contract was extended in 2021, there’s been no news yet about whether he will continue overseeing Star Trek projects beyond the remaining months of 2025.

The absence of news regarding new projects or an extension for Kurtzman’s contract leaves me speculating if Star Trek might be transitioning to new management soon. Although changes like these have occurred before, as an avid fan who’s noticed a surge of activity in the franchise over the past decade, this shift fills me with some apprehension. It seems peculiar that Paramount and Skydance would consider moving away from a creative force who’s contributed significantly to the franchise’s recent growth by spearheading innovative shows.

Skydance’s CEO Has A History With Star Trek

It’s important to mention that David Ellison, Skydance CEO, has been deeply connected with the Star Trek universe. Often referred to as a devoted fan, the internet acknowledges him as a key contributor to the Kelvin movies titled ‘Into Darkness’ and ‘Beyond’. According to Simon Pegg, Ellison shares the same passion for this franchise, and it seems he is keen on ensuring the fourth sequel materializes (as reported by TrekMovie.com).

It’s fantastic news for the Kelvin films, and it’s really exciting to think that Ellison might finally achieve what Paramount has been struggling with for nearly a decade – getting a fourth movie produced. However, this doesn’t necessarily mean he has any plans for television at the moment. While I enjoy the Kelvin movies, I would say they tend to focus more on action and adventure rather than delivering any significant moral messages or scientific discoveries.

The news about the fourth Kelvin film is excellent, and it’s great that Ellison might be able to accomplish what Paramount has been unsuccessful at for almost a decade. But, this doesn’t necessarily mean he’s planning anything for television yet. I must admit that I find the Kelvin movies entertaining, but they seem to prioritize action and adventure over moral lessons or scientific exploration.

It’s unclear to us what it implies that Ellison is a fan of Star Trek, or how this might impact the franchise as a whole. Although I hope that this means that the Star Trek series will continue in its current form for many more years and provide us with plenty of new shows to watch and discuss, I cannot be certain that this will happen. This uncertainty about the future changes to my beloved franchise is causing me concern.
