I’m Glad Sinners Landed Golden Globes Noms, But There Are Some Snubs That Still Sting

This year, Sinners has really captured the public’s imagination and sparked a lot of conversation among movie fans. Ryan Coogler’s acclaimed vampire film has clearly resonated with audiences, making it a strong contender for awards. It’s already received nominations and awards from several organizations, including some for the 2025 Golden Globes. While these nominations are fantastic, I’m a little let down by a few important omissions.

Which Golden Globes Categories Has Sinners Been Nominated In?

The Golden Globe nominations were announced early Monday, and several of the year’s biggest films were recognized. Sinners earned an impressive seven nominations, including one for Michael B. Jordan as Best Actor in a Drama for his dual role as “Smoke” and “Stack.” Ryan Coogler was nominated for Best Director, and Sinners is also up for Best Drama Film. A full list of the nominations follows.

  • Best Motion Picture – Drama
  • Best Director – Motion Picture (Ryan Coogler)
  • Best Performance By A Male Actor In A Motion Picture – Drama (Michael B. Jordan)
  • Best Screenplay – Motion Picture (Ryan Coogler)
  • Best Original Score – Motion Picture (Ludwig Göransson)
  • Best Original Song – Motion Picture (“I Lied To You” from Ludwig Göransson and Raphael Saadiq)
  • Cinematic And Box Office Achievement

The film receiving these nominations is a huge accomplishment, and it’s also a historic moment. I’m especially thrilled to see Michael B. Jordan nominated for a Golden Globe for the first time in his career. It’s also Ryan Coogler’s first nomination for both Best Director and Best Screenplay. And it’s wonderful that Ludwig Göransson is being recognized with nominations for his incredible music, which is so vital to the film.

While I’m thrilled with the nominations the film received, I also feel some other performances deserved recognition. A few of the actors were particularly strong and could have easily been nominated as well.

Sinners Deserved To Be Nominated In A Couple Of Other Categories

Although Michael B. Jordan received a lot of attention for playing the Smokestack Twins, Miles Caton also impressed audiences in his first film role. He played young sharecropper Sammie Moore with a believable energy and showcased remarkable musical talent. Many believed he was a strong contender for the Best Supporting Actor award.

Delroy Lindo also deserved consideration for a Supporting Actor award. He’s excellent as Delta Slim, a blues musician, in Sinners, balancing humor with a deeply tragic portrayal. A particular monologue about a lost friend is especially moving and memorable. It’s frustrating, because Lindo was previously overlooked for his powerful performance in Da 5 Bloods back in 2021.

Wunmi Mosaku, who plays the character Annie, a Hoodoo expert, is another standout performance I keep thinking about. She quickly makes an impact once she appears in the film. Mosaku brings both intelligence and deep emotion to the role, and she manages to make the story feel real and believable, which is important for a large-scale movie like this one, despite Annie’s connection to the supernatural.

While I’m thankful that Sinners—Ryan Coogler’s most unique film yet—received several Golden Globe nominations, I’m surprised that actors Caton, Osaku, or Lindo weren’t nominated. We’ll find out if the nominations turn into wins when the Golden Globes ceremony airs live on CBS on Sunday, January 11th at 8 p.m. Eastern Time. In the meantime, you can stream Coogler’s horror film with an HBO Max subscription.
