Marvel Studios may be intentionally misleading fans with the trailer for its upcoming series, VisionQuest. The studio first showed footage from the show, starring Paul Bettany, at New York Comic-Con last year. The trailer revealed more about Vision’s journey in the series, where he meets people who are physical representations of different AI programs – some familiar, some brand new.
The trailer convincingly presented everything as if it were happening in real life, showing these characters physically appearing in the world. However, some fans suspect this might be a deliberate deception by Marvel Studios, setting the stage for a major surprise in the upcoming show.
A major highlight of the new VisionQuest series is the return of Ultron, the villain memorably played by James Spader. While the android’s reappearance promises trouble, his specific plans are still a mystery.
Some believe Ultron’s ultimate plan was to create Vision, then control him and use his powers for Ultron’s own purposes.
The new trailer for NYCC showed several AI beings appearing similar to Vision. However, these aren’t truly new AIs – they’re actually computer programs created by Tony Stark, designed to look human, much like Vision first did in Avengers: Age of Ultron. But this explanation might not be entirely accurate.

A popular theory suggests that all the robotic characters, even Ultron, might actually be creations of Vision’s mind. Since Vision and Ultron were both made by the same person, it’s possible that a part of Ultron – and James Spader’s performance – still exists within Vision’s code.
With Vision brought back to life as a new, almost identical version called White Vision – but without his past memories – Ultron quickly spotted a flaw in his programming and exploited it.
What if Ultron is secretly controlling Vision’s thoughts? It’s possible everything we’ve seen is happening inside Vision’s mind. This would mean characters like Jocasta and FRIDAY aren’t really there with him, but are instead part of a deceptive simulation created by Ultron.

The idea gains some support from footage shown at New York Comic Con, where Ultron tells Vision that his entire life is a fabrication and he’s merely a shadow of someone else. This could be taken very literally, suggesting Ultron is essentially telling Vision that his experiences aren’t real and are all happening within his own mind.
As a huge fan, I’ve been really fascinated by the hints that Vision isn’t quite what he seems. It’s not just about his origins, but also about him actively questioning his own memories. There’s this one scene that really got me thinking – he’s watching footage of Thanos ripping the Soul Stone from his head, and it just adds to this whole idea that he might be living in some kind of simulation. It’s a really clever detail and makes you wonder what’s really going on.
It’s going to be interesting to see if Marvel is keeping a big surprise about VisionQuest under wraps. Will they reveal it right before the show comes out, or will they use it to build excitement during their marketing? VisionQuest is expected to premiere on Disney+ in 2026.
Is VisionQuest Hiding a Simulation Secret
There’s growing evidence that the VisionQuest project will reveal a significant twist involving a simulation. The story has been presented as Vision grappling with who he is after being brought back to life at the end of WandaVision.
Exploring complex ideas is best done through introspection, and that’s exactly what Vision does by delving into the depths of his artificial mind. It’s a surprisingly comic-book-like journey, and something the Marvel Cinematic Universe hasn’t fully explored in nearly two decades of storytelling.
This could also explain how a character like Ultron could come back, even though he was defeated in Avengers: Age of Ultron.
If he was simply imagining all of this, it would fit with the new series being a continuation of WandaVision, a show where characters also struggled with what was real.
