IKEA Set to Open the Doors to its Oxford Street Store
On tomorrow, the much-anticipated IKEA store, a Swedish design powerhouse, will officially unveil its entrance on the bustling Oxford Street in London.
As a gamer, stepping into this fresh gaming arena nestled within a historic Grade II listed building, I’ve found an advantageous location with a sprawling three-story layout. This haven for shoppers is brimming with handpicked stores, an iconic walkthrough showroom, and crucially, the much-loved IKEA eatery.
Overseeing the renovation process for some time now has been BDP, a London-based company that also designed the Hammersmith branch located west of central city. Earlier, this site was empty as it used to be home to the main Topshop store. However, after the brand showcased an exhibition featuring the renowned Frakta bag last year, the space has been vacant.
Currently, the architects have reimagined the three floors as an intricate labyrinth filled with furniture. Given its central London location, they aimed to cater to the limited space that many city residents often face, carefully arranging the sets accordingly. As per Peter Jelkeby, CEO and Chief Sustainability Officer of IKEA UK, several of these spaces were designed in conjunction with input from actual Londoners. “Crafted in partnership with authentic voices and keeping Londoners at heart, opening our doors marks a significant milestone after a painstaking renovation,” he further stated.

Highlighting its prime position, Jelkeby remarks that this location serves as a significant milestone in our brand’s quest for increased accessibility. He further explains that it will be an IKEA that is familiar and cherished by many, offering some unique features tailored specifically for this iconic city center store.
One of the notable aspects here includes the Curated Shops situated on the ground floor, showcasing the vibrant mix of the city through design. By presenting a selection of items that authentic London residents might choose, it highlights the urban diversity in a series of shopping selections. These displays will be refreshed frequently throughout the year.
The Showroom is designed to mimic the diverse living spaces in London, aiming to motivate others, whether they reside in compact flats with minimal natural light or grand houses filled with historical details. An essential Swedish Deli offers meals throughout the day, from breakfast to dinner. A Live Studio comes equipped for live broadcasts, and a special section named “Re-Shop and Re-Use” focuses on prolonging the useful life of secondhand furniture.
At last, a reliable delivery service has finally addressed the burning question that’s been lingering among all of us gamers: “How in the world can I transport a couch on the subway?” Now, that’s one puzzle solved!
Speaking about it, Tolga Öncü, IKEA’s Retail Manager, stated that this store located on a renowned and bustling street symbolizes our aim to advance our retail identity and make IKEA accessible where customers reside, work, and socialize. Our mission continues to be providing quality and budget-friendly products to an even wider audience in city centers worldwide.
IKEA Oxford Street will open daily from tomorrow, April 30, from 10am to 8pm.
