IKEA Just Unveiled Its Largest STOCKHOLM Collection to Date — and It Drops Tomorrow

This year, IKEA unveiled a fresh version of its cherished Stockholm collection for their Milan Design Week exhibition, marking a significant milestone in the refined line’s history. The innovative designs from Ola Wihlborg, Nike Karlsson, and Paulin Machado have breathed new life into the series, featuring upholstered seats, wooden furniture, home decor, and soft goods that draw inspiration from the pristine Scandinavian environment.

1985 saw the birth of a unique line, STOCKHOLM 2025, as it celebrates its 40th anniversary. Over time, this collection’s design aesthetic has evolved, reflecting the sleek, functional style that is synonymous with Scandinavian design. The inception of this collection was spearheaded by Ingvar Kamprad, who aimed to provide high-quality materials and timeless designs at a more affordable price, as he felt that exquisite Swedish furniture had been exclusively available to the wealthy, leaving ordinary people with subpar copies or nothing at all. This disparity didn’t sit well with him.

As IKEA steps into a fresh chapter, it unveils its largest STOCKHOLM delivery ever, boasting 96 items. Heading this collection is an expansive modular sofa system, conceptualized by Ola Wihlborg. Available in four vibrant color options such as aquatic turquoise and deep brown velvet, the sofas feature sculpted seats that are generously wide and low, equipped with oversized, sleek arms. In discussing the design, Wihlborg shared, “My aim was to craft a top-tier sofa that retains its form and appearance even after sitting on it. A piece that emphasizes comfort without relying on additional pillows.

This sofa designed by Nike Karlsson offers a traditional ambiance, boasting a sturdy pinewood frame and neutral cushions filled with coconut fiber. The designer also incorporates rattan materials from the 2017 collection in a modern sliding-door cabinet, complete with an intricately woven facade crafted by hand. Karlsson emphasizes that the extensive use of natural materials is inspired by the earthy motifs behind the 2025 collection. She explained, “Contrary to expectations, given the name STOCKHOLM, the pieces don’t evoke a big city feel; instead, we drew inspiration from the surroundings of nature and islands near it.

Additionally, Karlsson mentioned that the brand collaborated with a Swedish pine vendor to secure premium pine for their latest line of chairs, bookshelves, and dining tables. The Scandinavian forest motif persists with Paulin Machado’s input on textiles, such as wool rugs decorated with birch tree designs and lampshades embellished with foliage and mushroom sketches.
