The Forest

Similarly, a six-episode long 2017 crime drama unfolds around the mystery of a missing teenager in the dense forests of Belgium’s Ardennes region. The police team up with the girl’s teacher, who shares a haunting past as she experienced trauma in the same location during her youth.

The Forest received generally favorable criticism, with Decider commenting there is “ample intrigue and excellent acting to maintain our interest,” while the Irish Independent noted that a talented, lesser-known cast contributes to this series being an unsung gem.

The show is created by Delinda Jacobs and features Samuel Labarthe, Suzanne Clement, Alexia Barlier, Frederic Diefenthal, and Patrick Ridremont as the main cast members.

Available to watch on Netflix.

The Woods

This 2020 Polish series, inspired by Harlan Coben’s book with the same title, unfolds across two distinct timeframes.

The storyline of this 2020 Polish series is adapted from Harlan Coben’s book and features events unfolding in two different periods.

The narrative centers around prosecutor Paweł Kopiński (Grzegorz Damięcki), who is required to determine the identity of a corpse discovered alongside newspaper articles. This murder seems connected to a summer camp in 1994, where he served as a supervisor. During that time, four individuals were involved in an incident: two were killed, and another pair went missing.

The Woods” was among the initial adaptations of Coben’s works on Netflix, and since then, the platform has enjoyed massive success with shows like “Fool Me Once” and “Missing You.” However, this Polish series is quite popular and boasts an impressive 89% fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

Trapped

In a secluded Icelandic village, a corpse surfaces after a fierce snowstorm, sparking an investigation into a chilling homicide. As the storm confines everyone within the town, each resident becomes a possible culprit for the police to scrutinize.

Featuring Ólafur Darri Ólafsson, this series spans over three seasons, and the third season, or “Entrapped” as it’s called, can now be streamed on Netflix.

The series has earned praise as well, with its first season boasting a flawless score on Rotten Tomatoes. Critics from _The Guardian_ found the show to be captivating, engaging, and thrilling, while _The Hollywood Reporter_ noted that it goes beyond the conventions of Nordic Noir with some distinctive Icelandic elements.

You can stream Seasons 1 and 2 of the show on Prime Video through Viaplay, but Season 3 is exclusively available on Netflix.

The Breakthrough

Introduced recently, this captivating Swedish show unfolds around a real-life event – the double murder in 2004 that ignited an extensive probe but went unsolved for 16 long years. However, all changed when groundbreaking advancements in genetic genealogy came into play.

The television series draws inspiration from the real-life crime investigation detailed in the book “The Breakthrough: How The Genealogist Solved the Double Murder in Linköping,” written by Anna Bodin and Peter Sjölund. However, it is labeled as a work of fiction that follows an unusual protagonist, unconventional partnership, and the pursuit of a murderer.

Furthermore, the narrative delves into the impact of an unresolved crime on a community, exploring the plight of individuals who are left questioning ‘Who did this?’ and ‘What was the reason behind it?’ This aspect is also incorporated within the storyline.

Dept Q

Unexpectedly popular Netflix series, “Dept Q“, has managed to maintain a spot in the streaming service’s top list for almost two months since its debut.

The television series, which takes place in Scotland, is inspired by the Danish crime thriller novels sharing the same title, authored by Jussi Adler-Olsen. The narrative revolves around DCI Carl Morck (played by Matthew Goode), who resumes his duties post a harrowing event and is assigned to establish a new team dedicated to solving cold cases.

Additionally featuring Chloe Pirrie, Kelly Macdonald, Jamie Sives, and Kate Dickie, the series Dept Q has garnered both critical acclaim and popular success. With an impressive 87% fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes, Digital Spy describes it as “mostly enjoyable to watch”.

The Jetty

In this recently-released BBC crime series, Jenna Coleman takes on the lead role of a detective investigating an arson incident at a vacation home in Lancashire. As she delves deeper into the case, she uncovers links to a long-unsolved missing persons case, as well as a man entangled with two underage girls.

The production is masterminded by Cat Jones, with performances from Tom Glynn-Carney who’s known for ‘House of the Dragon’, Ruby Stokes, famed in ‘Bridgerton’, and Bo Bragason, set to make waves in ‘The Legend of Zelda’.

In our assessment, Digital Spy found The Jetty to be a gripping and engaging watch when it delivers its suspenseful storyline. On the other hand, the Evening Standard praised it as an intricate series, with Coleman portraying his character exceptionally well and beautifully.

Mare of Easttown

2021 saw Kate Winslet earn significant praise (even an Emmy) for her portrayal of a detective examining the murder of a young mother in a fictitious Philadelphia suburb, all while juggling personal matters. Despite being hailed as a local hero, some still question her abilities due to her ongoing efforts to solve another case.

As a devoted admirer, I can’t help but share my excitement about “Mare of Easttown,” which boasts an impressive 95% fresh score on Rotten Tomatoes. When this series was unveiled, it was met with immense praise, with The Guardian hailing it as a “wonderful” production that transcends its already impressive components, becoming something greater in the process.

Apart from Winslet, the series also features a strong ensemble of actors, including Jean Smart from Hacks, Angourie Rice known for Mean Girls, Evan Peters of American Horror Story, and Guy Pearce, star of The Brutalist.
