If I Do It For You, I Gotta Do It For Everyone

The team behind “The Conners” disclosed they approached George Clooney for a return to his character from “Roseanne”, sharing his frank refusal. The final episode of “The Conners”, lasting an hour, is set to debut on ABC on April 23 at 8 PM and will be available on Hulu the following day. This marks the conclusion of the spinoff as well as a poignant goodbye to the “Roseanne” series. Although a two-time Academy Award winner kindly declined the offer to reprise his role, it allows for other familiar faces to make appearances.

In an interview with TVLine, producers Bruce Helford and Dave Caplan shared they extended an invitation to George Clooney to rejoin the cast of The Conners, reprising his role as Booker Brooks. Clooney, who was a significant character in Roseanne’s first season and made a comeback for an episode in season 4, expressed interest in making a guest appearance, but noted that it could lead to unwanted requests for him to appear on other shows as well. Here are the producers’ quotes:

* “We reached out to George Clooney about returning for The Conners and reprising his role as Booker Brooks,” said executive producer Bruce Helford.
* “George was great in Roseanne, and we would love to have him back, but he has become a very busy man, which is fantastic for him,” added executive producer Dave Caplan. “If it were possible, we’d love to have him on the show.

Helford: “Unfortunately, Martin Mull departed before we could revive the character of Leon. We had hoped to get Johnny Galecki back for the role of David after Season 2, but we understood and respected…

Caplan exclaimed, “We missed out on Clooney! I can’t fathom what else could have been so crucial that he had to prioritize it over this!

As a dedicated cinephile, I’ve tried reaching out to him on several occasions. However, he gracefully declined, explaining, “You see, if I do it for you all, I must extend the same courtesy to everyone I’ve ever worked with who has a TV show. It wouldn’t be fair or right of me not to.” So, that was his diplomatic way of turning down our request.

What Clooney’s Return As Booker Brooks Would Mean

He’s Been Asked Before

In the initial season of “Roseanne,” I, George Clooney, took on the role as their superior at work. Across ten episodes throughout that first season, I briefly flirted with Jackie, serving as a potential love interest for her. Later on, in season 4, during a spooky Halloween episode, I returned to offer Jackie some solace when she was going through a difficult time. Remarkably, Jackie even referenced me during an episode of “The Conners” season 3, commenting that I looked exactly like George Clooney.

Previously, Roseanne Barr mentioned that Clooney was invited to appear as a guest star in the revival of “Roseanne”, but he chose not to participate. Meanwhile, regarding his other television roles, there’s a lawsuit surrounding “ER”, which involves Max’s “The Pitt”, and it seems unlikely that this series will be brought back. However, during the early stages of his career, Clooney did make appearances in popular shows such as “The Facts of Life” and “The Golden Girls”. It’s possible that these shows might return in some form in the future.

Our Take On Clooney’s Absence

It Makes Sense For Everyone Involved

Given his renowned fame, it seems logical for the creators to invite George Clooney to join the cast of “The Conners“. However, the series has moved past the original show “Roseanne” now. It might be more fitting to continue with the established characters in the final episodes instead of introducing a high-profile guest star, who while entertaining, wouldn’t align well with the current direction of the storyline.
