Idris Elba Returns as Luther in New Netflix Film with Ruth Wilson

As a huge fan of the Luther series, I’m thrilled to hear Idris Elba is coming back for another film with Netflix! It’s going to pick up the story after both the original TV show and the first Luther movie, The Fallen Sun, so we’ll finally see what happens next with this complex character.

Idris Elba and Ruth Wilson are teaming up again for a new thriller. Wilson previously appeared in the original series but wasn’t in last year’s Netflix movie, The Fallen Sun. Dermot Crowley will also star, and Jamie Payne – who directed both the original series and The Fallen Sun – is directing this project, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Neil Cross, the creator of the series, is writing the script for the new movie. The story follows a fresh string of unpredictable murders in London, and Luther is brought out of retirement in secret to investigate. He’ll have to protect the city and, at the same time, save himself from those who want him dead.

Director Payne spoke of Cross’s involvement and stated:

Neil has done it again – crafted a gripping and atmospheric story that brings the characters we love back together. It’s fantastic to return to the world of Luther alongside the incredible Idris Elba and Dermot Crowley. And I’m especially excited to see the return of the complex and captivating Alice Morgan, brought to life by the amazing Ruth Wilson.

Luther first aired on the BBC in 2010 and ran for five seasons, earning a high 88% score on Rotten Tomatoes. The show centers on John Luther, a homicide detective with the unusual ability to understand the psychology of killers. But Luther’s intense methods for catching criminals, combined with his own inner struggles, often put both him and others at risk.

As a huge fan of the show, I’m absolutely buzzing about Ruth Wilson potentially returning as Alice Morgan! It seemed like she fell to her death at the end of season five after that intense showdown with Luther, but knowing Alice, I always suspected she might have faked it. I’m really intrigued by the idea that she could be back, even if it’s just as a hallucination or a manifestation of Luther’s inner demons. It would be such a clever way to bring her character back into the story and really mess with his head!

Cross spoke of Crowley, Elba, and Wilson’s returns fondly:

Cross explained that the characters Luther, Alice, and Schenk feel like family to her. She’s always thinking about what they’re up to and worries about the dangers lurking in London when Luther isn’t around. That’s why the team decided to reunite and continue their story.

The Netflix film Luther: The Fallen Sun performed well both commercially and critically, launching strongly on the platform. Although reviews from critics were mixed, fans of the original Luther series generally enjoyed seeing the detective back in action. It currently has a 67% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

Filming for the upcoming Luther movie starts in February, but we don’t know yet when it will be released.
