Idris Elba movie gets unexpected TV prequel

As a die-hard fan who’s been following the Pacific Rim universe since its inception, I couldn’t be more excited about the upcoming origin series! I remember the thrill of the first movie and the adrenaline rush of the sequel, and now we’re diving deeper into this epic world. With Eric Heisserer, the mastermind behind Bird Box, at the helm, I have no doubts that this will be another home run.

More than ten years after its initial premiere, the film “Pacific Rim,” starring Idris Elba, will have a brand-new television adaptation.

In 2013, the movie “Pacific Rim” ignited the universe of the same name, where colossal beasts rose from a gateway (referred to as The Breach) in the Pacific Ocean. With humanity on the defensive, we constructed titanic combat mechs called Jaegers and aimed to seal The Breach.

In 2018, the follow-up film titled “Pacific Rim Uprising” hit the screens, taking place a decade following the Battle of the Breach. Meanwhile, the animated Netflix series “Pacific Rim: The Black” wrapped up its two-season run in 2022.

Currently, there’s a new origin series in the works for our beloved franchise, as Legendary Entertainment has given the green light. As reported by Deadline, this project will be spearheaded by production company Chronology, a venture established by Eric Heisserer and Carmen Lewis, who are known for creating Bird Box.

According to Jason Clodfelter, President of Legendary Television, “Eric is a versatile and productive artist whose achievements in both critical acclaim and commercial success are self-evident.” He went on to express excitement about their upcoming collaboration with Eric, Chronology, and Carmen in the creation of a new installment within the widely admired Pacific Rim universe.

The news follows on the heels of Legendary Entertainment’s announcement of a prequel series for the highly acclaimed Dune franchise as well.

The upcoming six-part series titled “Dune: Prophecy” is set a full 10,000 years prior to the stories depicted in the main films.

Drawing inspiration from Frank Herbert’s novel “Sisterhood of Dune“, the series chronicles the journey of sisters Tula (Williams) and Valya (Watson) Harkonnen, delving into the ways they founded the legendary Bene Gesserit.

After undergoing various modifications during its creation, an official date for the launch has been set. The movie “Dune: Prophecy” is scheduled to debut on Max’s streaming platform in November.
