Idealistic
Geraldine Viswanathan, who is believed to portray Marvel Studio’s Songbird, spoke about her optimistic Marvel Cinematic Universe character for the initial time before making her appearance.
In January 2024, it was officially announced that Viswanathan would be joining the cast of “Thunderbolts,” although the specific role wasn’t disclosed at that time. This position had originally been intended for Ayo Edebiri from “The Bear.” Now, she will work alongside a distinguished group of Marvel Cinematic Universe veterans who will collaborate to create an exceptional team of antiheroes and reformed villains, all set to confront the global menace posed by the Sentry.
Rumored Songbird Star Addresses “Idealistic” Hero in Marvel Debut
At the UK debut event for Marvel Studios‘ Thunderbolts, lead actress Geraldine Viswanathan shared insights about her character for the very first time when she spoke with The Upcoming.
Regarding her character as Mel, she affirmed her position as Valentina Allegra de Fontaine’s assistant, someone whose intentions are genuinely good. Described as an idealist, she eventually began to ponder about the appropriateness of working alongside a character with a darker disposition like Val, expressing some reservations about their association.
It’s incredibly thrilling! The sensation of arriving and instantly spotting everyone on the giant screen is simply indescribable. It’s such an exhilarating experience! In this story, I portray Mel, who serves as Valentina’s assistant. Valentina has a good heart but can be somewhat unscrupulous, which causes Mel to ponder her role in Valentina’s life.
Reflecting on his experiences, Viswanathan praised Julia Louis-Dreyfus for her role as Val, stating that she deserved an “Oscar for Best Boss” and went so far as to call her the best.
I presented Julia with an Oscar for being the Best Boss. She doesn’t have enough accolades in my opinion, so I thought it would be nice to contribute another award to her collection. Honestly, she’s exceptional, and I felt compelled to honor her with this recognition.
Reflecting on her role in Thunderbolts*, the actress recalled that she was quite unwell and bedridden when director Jake Schreier phoned her to offer the movie part. Intrigued, he informed her, “‘You need to discover this for yourself,’” which eventually led to a remarkable experience for her.
I had an absolutely extraordinary experience. At the time, I was bedridden due to illness, but Jake Schreier called me out of the blue and asked, “Would you be interested in this opportunity?” Initially, I had no idea what he was referring to, so he said, “You’ll have to discover it yourself.” It was an unbelievable moment that felt like a dream come true. I still can’t believe it happened!
Following the latest Thunderbolts trailer, speculation has arisen that Viswanathan might indeed be portraying the MCU’s Songbird, a role yet to be officially confirmed before its premiere.
Will Thunderbolts* Reveal Mel as Marvel Studios’ Songbird?
Initial feedback suggests that “Thunderbolts” might be among Marvel’s Multiverse Saga’s top films, with critics commending the action and Florence Pugh’s performance alongside her fellow actors. Yet, as its release date approaches, there’s speculation about whether or not the identity of Mel as Songbird is one of the secrets yet to be unveiled.
In the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Thunderbolts, where a multitude of superheroes and a formidable supervillain like Sentry dominate, it’s possible that little screen time might be dedicated to a fresh character such as Viswanathan. However, given her limited exposure in the promotional materials, Marvel might be subtly laying groundwork for her to become one of the film’s unexpected standouts.
Songbird, a founding member of the Thunderbolts, boasts an extraordinary talent for controlling sounds. With her vocal prowess, she can generate sound waves strong enough to produce blasts and protective shields. Moreover, she has the power to affect others’ feelings through her voice.
Reflecting on how distinct this Thunderbolts group is compared to the comic book team, incorporating Songbird would serve as a subtle acknowledgement of their roots. If, however, she’s held back for a future project or perhaps one of the movie’s post-credit scenes, she still has ample opportunity to leave her mark.
Thunderbolts* will debut in theaters on Friday, May 2.
