Iconic Neighbours star reveals the truth behind his exit from the soap after 30 years: 'It wasn't my choice'

As a devoted fan, I can’t help but feel a tinge of melancholy hearing Ryan Moloney, the embodiment of Toadfish Rebecchi for over three decades on Neighbours, share his impending departure from Ramsay Street. His decision, it seems, wasn’t self-imposed; instead, he was gently nudged by the show’s creatives.

Actor Ryan Moloney, known for his role on Neighbours, shared that he didn’t make the call to depart from Ramsay Street himself.

Ryan, known for his long-term role as Jarrod ‘Toadfish’ Rebecchi on the well-known soap opera, revealed in June that he plans to bring an end to this legendary character.

In an interview with the Australian soap opera site “Back to the Bay,” Ryan, aged 44, expressed his gratitude as he felt relieved that the decision was taken out of his hands.

‘Well, it actually wasn’t my choice. It was their choice,’ he told the publication.

For a while, he had been tempted to depart from the soap, yet its allure was overpowering, making it impossible for him to resist staying.

He’s been yearning to move on for quite some time, but his job as a Neighbor (or neighboring colleague) is unique in that it offers the chance to work with fantastic individuals. The compensation is excellent too. If a friend of his held such a position, he’d likely encourage them, saying something like, “Dude, what are you doing? You need to stick around. Hang in there as long as possible,” he expressed.

Ryan mentioned that for a while now, he’s been yearning to advance, but finding the words to decline has consistently been challenging for him.

In other words, I’m really appreciative they took the step of making that decision on my behalf, as I find it hard to refuse a contract.

‘I think I’d always be kind of like, “oh, yes, okay, I’ll do another one”.’

In June, Ryan publicly declared that he was stepping down from the series, subtly suggesting his upcoming endeavors.

“Hello, I’m Ryan Moloney, who used to play Jarrod ‘Toadfish’ Rebecchi on Neighbours. Yes, you heard it right – after 30 years of portraying Toadie, I’ll be saying goodbye to Ramsay Street,” Ryan stated in the Instagram post shared by Neighbours.

Given my years of reading and analyzing literature, I can’t confidently predict the fate of this character or whether they will reappear in future stories. The unpredictability of fiction is one of its most captivating aspects, drawing on the rich tapestry of life experiences that shape a story and its characters.

I’ve always been a dreamer, with big aspirations for my future. Just like Jim Robinson, I see myself as someone who’ll rise through the ranks and leave a lasting impact on the industry I choose to work in. But then again, I might just be the next Harold Bishop, popping back over the years, sharing my wisdom and experience with those coming up behind me. Whatever happens, I know that my life experiences will shape my destiny and help me find success in my chosen path.

Ryan emphasized that although Toadie was considering departing from Ramsay Street, he would remain an integral member of the Neighbors community.

He mentioned that even though he won’t act out the wonderful storylines for you on screen, he plans to contribute by creating those stories from behind the camera instead.

As someone who has recently embarked on the journey of becoming a director and having just wrapped up filming my initial episode, I eagerly anticipate your appreciation for the culmination of my hard work, passion, and lifelong learning experiences that have led me to this moment.

As I bid a temporary farewell, let me express my deepest gratitude to each and every one of you, my devoted fans. I can hardly contain my emotions as I say goodbye to you all, and to the beloved town of Erinsborough. But fear not! Do not miss out on what’s in store for Ramsay Street. Trust me, it will be a sight to behold!

Since his debut as Toadie on Ramsay Street in 1995, Ryan has gained widespread recognition and is now widely recognized as a familiar face on the Neighbours set.

Over multiple plotlines, he found himself right in the thick of things – from gripping and emotional sagas, such as his poignant romantic tale with Dee Bliss, portrayed by Madeleine West.
