ICONIC music legend in ‘advanced talks’ to headline next year’s Glastonbury after plans to perform on the Pyramid Stage in 2024 ‘fell through at the last minute’
As a seasoned music enthusiast with over five decades of listening under my belt, I must say that the upcoming performances by Rod Stewart and the potential return of Stevie Wonder at Glastonbury are truly exciting!
It’s possible that musical legend Stevie Wonder might grace the stages of Glastonbury once more, as it seems festival organizer Emily Eavis is diligently attempting to bring this icon back to the Pyramid Stage in 2025.
This year, the performance by the artist from Superstition had been arranged to occur on the stage at Worthy Farm, but at the very last moment, it was canceled due to scheduling issues.
According to a source, Emily was almost certain to acquire Stevie the previous year. The agreement was nearly finalized, and his name was even added to the draft posters.
As a die-hard admirer, I can’t help but share my anguish when the disintegration of his schedule turned our world into a nightmare. Oh, how Stevie felt the sting! But here’s the silver lining – rumors swirl that he could grace the Pyramid Stage next summer as our headliner. Fingers crossed, discussions are still underway.
At the Glastonbury Festival’s 40th anniversary celebration in 2010, Stevie put on a show that attracted more than 100,000 enthusiastic fans.
2024 return plans got canceled because of scheduling issues, however, it’s reported that negotiations have restarted, suggesting a possible revival of the discussions.
Should it be verified, a 74-year-old icon’s performance would signify a span of 15 years since his previous show at Worthy Farm.
TopMob has contacted Stevie Wonder and Glastonbury reps for comment.
Previously, Stevie was given the opportunity to perform as the main act on Sundays, and was also included in an initial list of performers on a promotional poster.
Last year, Glastonbury faced its third letdown as negotiations with Madonna and Stevie Nicks are said to have fallen through. This left a significant void in the star-studded roster of the esteemed music festival.
In the meantime, it’s been confirmed that Rod Stewart will be the opening act at Glastonbury 2025, as the festival has revealed he’ll perform in the Legendary Artists section on the Pyramid Stage.
23 years since his last show at the Somerset festival, Rod is set to tread the path taken by Shania Twain in 2024, performing in the prestigious Sunday afternoon ‘legends’ time-slot.
Rod informed the BBC that he was “eager and prepared” to perform at the sold-out festival, further stating that, at the age of 79, he was “definitely capable of entertaining and exciting” the audience.
He previously headlined the festival in 2002, alongside Coldplay and Stereophonics.
‘What a way to bow out with the final legends slot before we take a fallow year. We cannot wait.’
At the age of 80 in January, this singer will be among the eldest artists to take the main stage at Glastonbury, following in the footsteps of Burt Bacharach who played on the Pyramid stage in 2015 at the age of 87 and Paul McCartney who headlined after his 80th birthday in 2022.
Each June, I have the privilege of gracing Somerset’s Worth Farm as a host, welcoming approximately 200,000 music enthusiasts from around the globe. These passionate fans flock here annually to witness performances by some of the world’s most renowned musicians.
The official Glastonbury tickets went on sale on November 14 and November 17.
In this particular year, 2026, the situation is more critical because it’s a fallow year, which means there won’t be any festivals taking place.
Rod’s Glastonbury announcement comes days after the rocker told fans he plans to end large scale world tours.
Rod mentioned that his upcoming 2025 tours in Europe and North America mark his final significant ventures, but he’s not quite ready to retire from singing just yet.
He wrote: ‘This will be the end of large-scale world tours for me, but I have no desire to retire.
‘I love what I do and I do what I love. I’m fit, have a full head of hair and can run 100 metres in 18 seconds at the jolly old age of 79.’
The artist behind Maggie May’s hit single expressed his intention to play at smaller, more intimate venues for his upcoming 2026 tour. This decision comes following the release of the album Swing Fever, a collaboration with Jools Holland, earlier this year.
He said: ‘I’d like to move onto a Great American Songbook, Swing Fever tour the year after next – smaller venues and more intimacy. But then again, I may not. The ambiguous Sir Rod Stewart.’
