Iconic Blue Heelers star dead at 92 following a short illness
As a devoted follower of Australian cinema, I cannot help but feel a profound sense of loss upon hearing about the passing of Peter Aanensen. This man was not just a silver-haired character actor; he was an icon, a beacon of talent and charisma that graced our screens for over five decades.
Legendary Australian actor Peter Aanensen passed away recently at the age of 92, following a prolonged fight against a chest illness.
The veteran performer died on May 3, with his family only releasing news of his passing this week.
Over a five-decade acting career, the character actor known for his silver hair graced numerous popular Australian television programs and films. During this time, he portrayed Merv Poole in the series Blue Heelers.
Additionally, he made an appearance in the 2002 blockbuster comedy “Crackerjack,” starring alongside Mick Molloy, as well as the 1999 film “The Craic” featuring the Irish comedian Jimeoin.
The captivating performer hails from Melbourne, having been born there in 1932. He embarked on his acting journey on the theater stage during the late 1950s.
During the 1960s and 1970s, Aanensen made appearances on numerous well-known Australian series such as Sons and Daughters, Cop Shop, and The Flying Doctors.
To global spectators, Peter became particularly famous for co-starring with film icons Sam Neill and Meryl Streep in the 1988 Academy Award-nominated production, “Evil Angels.” This motion picture recreated the Lindy Chamberlain trial.
In a touching declaration, his loved ones honored him by saying, “He was an amiable, generous, and unassumingly funny individual. He held a deep affection for musical theater; our gatherings were filled with laughter as we sang together to the tunes on the record player.”
Peter frequently expressed strong displeasure towards what he perceived as an unfair bias among the umpires during Hawthorn games. He believed that the umpires consistently favored one team over the other.
As an ardent admirer, I’ve been deeply invested in the journey of reconciliation between Australia and its Indigenous communities. The way Australia has historically dealt with its First Nations peoples has stirred intense emotions within me, and the recent failure of the Voice referendum left me feeling enraged.
Tragically, Peter’s beloved wife Valerie predeceased him, dying in 2000.
Peter is survived by his daughter Leah.
