Ian McShane Has Thoughts About How John Wick 4 Ended And What It Means For Future Movies
In movies, it’s often not certain that a character is truly dead unless you see the body. This makes interpreting the ending of “John Wick: Chapter 4” tricky since while Keanu Reeves’ character, John Wick, appears to die in a hail of bullets, we never actually witness his lifeless form. The film concludes with John slumped over and friends visiting a grave with his name on it, but fans have been discussing if he’s really deceased. The situation becomes even more intriguing given Lionsgate’s announcement earlier this year about three more films in the franchise. However, if you ask Ian McShane, who plays Winston Scott, John is indeed alive, and there are hints that suggest we should be asking questions about it.
Hannah Saulic from TopMob interviewed an actor from the John Wick franchise during a recent press day for the upcoming spinoff film, Ballerina. One of the questions she asked was about Winston’s relationship with John following Chapter 4. If it is revealed that John is still alive, would Winston be upset that his friend had faked his death? According to McShane, he wouldn’t because he has a reason for understanding this action.
I believe it’s clear that [Winston] is aware he’s still alive. After all, the last scene we witnessed was me placing my hand on the coffin and saying ‘Das vedanya, my son,’ which translates to ‘Farewell, my son’ in Russian. It’s also worth noting that Winston seems to speak Russian and there’s a faint tattoo visible on his hand – both of which suggest an intriguing background for him. However, we can only guess at his true identity.
Despite audiences observing four films depicting the intricate bond between John Wick and Winston Scott, with notable instances like Winston shooting John off a roof in Chapter 3, it’s interesting to consider that we haven’t been given insight into their shared past. They clearly move in the same circles and have worked together for years, but what initial encounter or event sparked their friendship remains unknown. Ian McShane hints that Winston’s use of Russian at John Wick’s grave and the tattoo on his hand could be signs of a more extensive history.
As a movie reviewer, I can’t help but admire the intrigue and open-ended nature that the John Wick franchise has brought to life. While I must admit, I’ve steered clear of The Continental streaming series, as my creative vision diverges significantly from its direction.
What I’m trying to convey is that one of the show’s strengths lies in its mysteries: it doesn’t provide all the answers at once. Instead, it drops hints here and there. It seems like you have an answer, but then it turns out you don’t. That’s what great stories do – they keep revealing details to keep you hooked.
At CinemaCon 2025, Lionsgate revealed plans for not just an animated prequel and a spinoff featuring Donnie Yen‘s character from “John Wick: Chapter 4”, but also a “John Wick: Chapter 5”. However, director Chad Stahelski has expressed some doubts about the project being finalized. The key factors are the creative enthusiasm and backing of both Stahelski and Keanu Reeves, with Ian McShane stating that it’s ultimately up to Reeves to decide whether the main series continues.
Despite the possibility that John Wick: Chapter 5 may never materialize, there are still in-series escapades on the horizon such as Ballerina, which introduces Ana de Armas’ character Eve Macarro as the new lead. This film also includes performances from Ian McShane, Keanu Reeves, Anjelica Huston, and the late Lance Reddick. As Ian McShane himself put it…
If a fifth John Wick film is planned, it all depends on Keanu Reeves. If he decides to participate, the movie will happen. In case he doesn’t wish to continue, they might develop another installment without him, or perhaps explore different storylines – movies often take unexpected turns like that.
Currently, there are no announced release dates for any more “John Wick” movies, but we’ll make sure to share any major updates right here on TopMob. In the meantime, why not head to the cinema and watch “Ballerina”, which has been holding its own against the box office juggernaut that is “Lilo & Stitch” in its opening weekend?
