Ian McKellen says his fat suit saved him from further injury after stage fall

As a cinephile with a rich and vast cinematic journey under my belt, I have always admired Sir Ian McKellen for his unparalleled talent and indomitable spirit. The recent incident involving his accident during “Player Kings” is indeed a stark reminder of the fragility that lies beneath the grandeur of live theater.

Ian McKellen states that his padded costume likely spared him from more severe injuries after falling off the stage during a West End show in June.

In an interview with Saga magazine on Tuesday, McKellen shared that by donning a padded costume for Falstaff, he managed to safeguard his ribs and other joints. As a result, he feels incredibly fortunate.

Sir Ian McKellen took on the role of John Falstaff in the combined stage production of “The Player Kings,” which is a blend of Shakespeare’s “Henry IV” Parts 1 and 2. This play, set in the year 1403, revolves around rebellious nobles plotting to dethrone King Henry IV. In an action-packed scene, the actor famously known for his role in “X-Men” slipped over a newspaper, got his foot tangled on a chair, and unintentionally tumbled offstage, calling out to the audience for help, “Please assist me!”

“Sir Ian McKellen shared that his broken vertebrae and fractured wrist are still healing. He avoids going out due to anxiety over potential accidents and because he experiences intense pain in his shoulders, a result of the overall shock to his body.”

A day following the incident, McKellen turned to X, which was previously known as Twitter, to express gratitude for the extraordinary support from fans and to disclose that a team of specialists had diagnosed and treated him. He did not reveal specifics about his injuries but stated that doctors have guaranteed a full and speedy recovery.

As a film enthusiast, I found myself compelled to share my thoughts on the recent on-set incident that has left one of our beloved stars sidelined. Despite his valiant efforts to continue, an unfortunate accident resulted in him needing to step away from the production. He’s currently undergoing recovery, sporting a neck brace as he takes time to heal. Here’s hoping for a swift and full recovery so we can once again enjoy his captivating performances on the silver screen.

The actor from “Lord of the Rings” shared with Saga that he believed it signified an ending, and it was quite distressing for him. “End” here doesn’t imply his own demise, but rather it seemed like the conclusion to my involvement in the production.

The “X-Men” actor said he reassured himself that age wasn’t a factor in his fall.

“Even at my ripe age, I remind myself that acting is still within my grasp, it was merely an unfortunate mishap,” I, the ardent movie enthusiast, would say. “I didn’t succumb to unconsciousness, nor did I feel lightheaded, but unfortunately, I haven’t been able to rejoin the stage, and they’ve carried on without me.”

In July, following his accident, Sir Ian McKellen posted on Instagram to mark the last performance of “Player Kings” without him, indicating he would be present at the closing show. During the national tour and the final three performances, his understudy, David Semark, stepped into the role.

On the day of the 101st and last show of Player Kings, I rejoiced by trimming Falstaff’s beard, which had been growing for nine months, as McKellen mentioned in his caption about the character. “I will be watching from the audience during the matinee performance in Newcastle.”
