Ian McKellen reveals it will be another year before he is back on stage after he went 'head first' into audience during West End performance

As a lifestyle expert with a deep appreciation for the arts and a keen eye for the nuances of human experiences, I cannot help but empathize with Sir Ian McKellen‘s recent ordeal. At 85, the esteemed actor has graced our screens and stages with his captivating performances for decades, making him not just an icon but a beacon of resilience in the world of entertainment.

According to Ian McKellen, you can expect that he won’t return to the stage for at least another year, as he sustained an injury from a fall during his West End show in June.

85-year-old actor tumbled forward, hitting the audience with his head, followed by a terrifying shriek during his performance at the Noel Coward Theatre for Player Kings.

Since the incident, the actor from The Lord of the Rings has been recovering. However, he initially believed he had fractured his spine immediately after the fall.

On Wednesday, Ian appeared as a guest on Simon Marks’ Greatest Hits Radio Drivetime show, during which they talked about the timeline Ian has set for his return to the theater industry.

He mentioned that instead of a significant physical wound, he’s dealing with a mental distress, as he initially believed the situation to be far more severe than it turned out to be.

It seems that in a moment of intense fear, I believed I was close to death, thinking I had fractured my neck. Somehow, I had uttered, “I’ve broken my neck, I am dying.” Now, I understand that if I said it, I must have truly felt I was in such a state. I need to accept and cope with that reality. I’m not at the point of death just yet, but I hope for a recovery so I can return to acting on stage again.

In response to Simon’s question about knowing when it was the right time, Ian stated: “That’s an insightful observation – I’ll recognize the moment since the contract specifies a specific arrival time. At present, I don’t plan to perform on stage for another year, and by then, everything should work out fine.

Instead of stages, Simon has been inquiring if there’s truth to the whispers that Sir Ian might take on his legendary character, Gandalf, once more in The Lord of the Rings (films).

He said: ‘One can’t be indifferent to the possibility that I might be able to go back and play a part that I thought I’d finished with nearly 25 years ago.

As a lifestyle expert, I must share some exciting news about the potential return of a beloved character. It seems there could be two films featuring Gandalf, yet until I lay my eyes on the script, I can’t say for certain if it’s a role I would eagerly accept – however, I do feel a strong attachment to this character, as if he belongs to me in some way.

Additionally, on Wednesday, Ian appeared alongside Jimmy Hill on the Capital Evening program. During this appearance, he confessed to taking one famous prop from The Lord of the Rings movie franchise, all without Peter Jackson ever finding out about it.

Host Jimmy said he had heard Ian has Gandalf’s staff behind the bar in his London pub The Grapes.

Recently, there have been discussions among people suggesting that you might take up the role of Gandalf again in The Lord of the Rings series, Ian.

As someone who has done their homework, I believe I can confidently say that the staff, more specifically, the one known as Gandalf’s staff, is stationed at the bar in your establishment, The Grapes?

Ian replied: ‘In my pub in Limehouse, if you want to go and see it.’

Jimmy said: ‘So, are they going to have to go into your pub and break in and steal the staff?’

Ian said: ‘That’s an interesting point. Now, Peter Jackson, who directed those Middle Earth movies, has kept everything. Now, everything is a lot, because every person in that movie wore a wig.

All elements – the mustaches, eyebrows, padding, each prop (like swords, shields, and gloves) – have all been carefully kept and maintained.

As a die-hard fan, let me share an intriguing tale. Recently, I had the privilege of crossing paths with the legendary Peter Jackson. In our conversation, he mentioned a peculiar predicament: “Yes, I have everything, except for one thing – the keys to Bag End, I can’t seem to find them anywhere.” Little does he know, those very keys are adorning a hook in my humble abode… or should I say, they were. Yes, you heard it here first, folks! I managed to acquire them, quite accidentally, of course!

Jimmy replied: ‘It’ll be fine, he’ll be able to get a new set cut!’

Ian then joked: ‘They can make some new keys, and they can probably make a new staff.’

Tune into The Capital Evening Show with Jimmy Hill, weekdays from 7pm-10pm on Capital
