Ian McKellen and Lesley Manville’s British thriller is now on Prime Video
As a gaming enthusiast, I just wanted to share some exciting news! The gripping British thriller “The Critic,” featuring the remarkable talents of Sir Ian McKellen and Lesley Manville, can now be streamed on Prime Video. Don’t miss out on this captivating drama!
In a 2024 movie adaptation, Oscar-nominated writer Patrick Marber transforms Anthony Quinn’s novel “Curtain Call”. This film features Sir Ian McKellen as Jimmy Erskine, a notoriously fierce and cruel theater critic residing in London during the year 1934.
Yet, when Jimmy encounters the new proprietor of the Daily Chronicle, David Brooke (Mark Strong), he enters into a deal akin to that of Faust, seeking help from a distressed actress named Nina Land (Gemma Arterton), who yearns for his approval.

In the play, Manville portrays Annabel, who serves as a supportive figure for Nina, alongside actors like Alfred Enoch, Romola Garai, Ben Barnes, and Nikesh Patel.
If you didn’t catch The Critic at the cinema after its September premiere or would simply like to watch it again, you can now stream it on Prime Video in both the UK and Ireland.
In a nutshell, the movie titled “The Critic” boasts a relatively positive 52% approval score on Rotten Tomatoes based on 93 critiques. The reviews generally appreciate the acting abilities of the cast, yet express some dissatisfaction with the film’s less engaging second part.
As a dedicated fan, I can’t help but admit that Ian McKellen excels in the role of a critic more than many others. However, even his character might find this predictable melodrama deserving of just an average rating.
In the critique of the movie by Digital Spy, we expressed that McKellen skillfully employs his inherent charm in a captivating manner, and further remarked: “It’s a pity The Critic itself didn’t maintain the same level of intrigue as the ruthless critic portrayed within it.
It was disclosed last year that Sir Ian McKellen’s character Gandalf will show up in upcoming “Lord of the Rings” films, including two live-action projects: “The Search for Gollum” and another yet-to-be-titled movie.
McKellen stated that he was recently informed about additional movies being made, with Gandalf being part of them, and they anticipate he might portray this character.
“When? I don’t know. What the script is? It’s not written yet. So they better be quick!”
The Critic is now available to watch on Prime Video.
