Ian ‘Dicko’ Dickson Reveals Simon Cowell Inspired His Mean Judge Persona

Ian ‘Dicko’ Dickson has disclosed the individual who served as his motivation for creating his ‘tough-judge character’ on Australian Idol.

Dicko, aged 62, served as a judge on a well-known reality TV program for a span of seven years. He occupied his seat during the initial two seasons and then returned for another three seasons from the years 2007 to 2009.

In the podcast series The Moment It Changed: Touchdown, Dicko openly acknowledged that Simon Cowell motivated him to assume the position as the harsh judge.

Over the course of nine seasons on American Idol, Simon gained a reputation for his candid and straightforward criticism towards aspiring singers.

Dicko visited London personally to meet Simon, as Channel Ten had acquired the rights to the popular reality series.

He recalled driving the car from the hotel to the office, with British tabloid newspapers in the back of the limousine. Interestingly, Simon was featured on the front page of three out of every four such newspapers in the United Kingdom, he mentioned.

‘So I went in, saw Cowell and I went, “What is going on with you? What is going on?”

As a lifestyle advisor, I’d say, “I was once told that if you’re planning a trip Down Under, it’s an absolute must. It’ll be an incredible experience for you. And here’s a little secret: the more assertive or ‘tough’ you come across, the more attraction you seem to garner from the ladies.” That was the advice I received.

Dicko agreed willingly to accept the part as the stern judge, understanding that he would have to mete out discomfort or embarrassment, even though it might cause him personal humiliation.

‘Idol did require a b***ard judge and I guess I was happy to oblige,’ he said.

I came to understand the significant part Simon played in the show, and it’s clear now—whether we choose to acknowledge it or not—that a certain aspect of the show involved public critique or criticism of young vocalists, which could be seen as a form of ritual humiliation.

In this situation, it seemed there was a sense of risk or danger for the eager contestant as they faced the panel of judges and the cameras. I suppose I embodied that risk.

Dicko confessed that, during a trial run for the show, he intentionally increased his rudeness. He found it unpleasant to behave in such a way.

He mentioned that he underwent a screen test for Idol, but during that process, he admittedly behaved quite rudely towards the producers.

That evening, I returned home unable to rest, feeling miserable, and discussed my concerns with my spouse. With my spouse by my side, I expressed doubts, saying, “I’m unsure if I can fulfill the role of a stern judge.

In the open interview, Dicko expressed his opinion that Australian Idol hadn’t made significant strides in transforming the appearance of the local music scene.

‘I don’t think Idol changed the record industry at all,’ he said.

I believe that Idol revolutionized the television landscape and transformed the lives of several fortunate people, among whom I am one.

If it significantly impacted the music industry, it would likely still exist today. However, it turned out to be just a notable temporary phenomenon rather than a lasting one.

Throughout his tenure on Idol, Dicko undoubtedly encountered a good deal of criticism regarding his judging style.

In 2003, he faced criticism when he publicly critiqued Pauline Curuenavuli’s appearance during a live show in front of a studio audience and millions watching at home.

In a stunning gold gown, Paulini made a captivating appearance during her audition before the judges. However, her dreams were soon shattered when Dicko delivered his verdict shortly afterwards.

In a heartfelt moment on live TV, I gently advised Paulini to consider updating her wardrobe choices and embarking on a weight loss journey for her overall well-being.

In 2023, while participating in I’m A Celebrity…Get Me Out Of Here!, Dicko reminisced about the contentious event that had occurred.

He acknowledged that if he were to attempt such an action on Australian television now, he would likely face public backlash, similar to being tarred and feathered. Moreover, he mentioned that the surprising event is still a topic of conversation for some.

Later on, Dicko found himself shedding tears as he shared a story about a man confessing that his daughter’s anorexia had been triggered by remarks made by him.

He declared, “It’s on you if something happens to her. You made a comment to Paulini that upset an Australian Idol fan, and she reacted severely, ending up in the hospital. If she passes away, I will hold you accountable for your actions.

It is extremely difficult to accept that my words may have caused a precious young woman, whom her father adores, to end up in a hospital room where she might lose her life.
