Ian Brown is seen for the first time since his bandmate Gary ‘Mani’ Mounfield died as emotional Stone Roses frontman heads out in Manchester

Ian Brown appeared visibly moved as he was seen in Manchester on Saturday, following the passing of his longtime bandmate, Gary ‘Mani’ Mounfield, two days prior.

The Stone Roses frontman sported long grey hair and a bushy beard as he headed out in the rain.

Ian, age 62, publicly honored Mani, 63, following the unexpected news of his death on Thursday. The singer shared a message on social media saying, ‘Rest In Peace Mani’.

Ian also reshared a fan post which included a throwback photo when they met the band.

As a lifelong music fan, I was so saddened to hear about the passing of Mani, the bassist from The Stone Roses. I actually had the chance to meet him, Reni, and Ian Brown a few years back – it was back in 2016, at a local bar. I was a bit nervous, but I went over to say hello, and they were just genuinely lovely. They were down-to-earth, funny, and so warm – no rockstar attitude at all! Thank you, Mani, for all the incredible music. Rest in peace.

Mani’s brother, Greg, shared the sad news of Mani’s passing on Facebook, writing that he was heartbroken to announce his brother’s death. He signed the post ‘Gary Mani Mounfield RIP’.

Gary passed away at his home in Heaton Moor, Stockport, after suffering a seizure and collapsing.

Family sources say that an ambulance was called but he couldn’t be revived.

The Stone Roses shared a vintage photo of Gary and bassist Mani on X, announcing with deep sadness that Mani had passed away. They described him as an incredible bass player and a cherished friend.

According to the Daily Mail, Noel and Liam Gallagher learned about Mani’s passing on Thursday afternoon, only a few hours before his brother, Greg, publicly shared the news. Reports indicate the Gallagher brothers are devastated by the loss.

This loss comes just two years after the death of his wife, Imelda Mounfield, who passed away from cancer. Imelda, a mother of twin sons, received a bowel cancer diagnosis three years prior.

Only six days ago, Mani announced an intimate conversation tour on the band’s website.

I’m so excited! He’s planning a tour where he’ll be sharing stories from his incredible career, hitting venues all over the UK from September 2026 to June 2027. He’s going to talk about everything – including that legendary Spike Island gig in 1990 and the amazing Stone Roses stadium tour when they got back together. It’s going to be a real trip down memory lane for all of us fans.

The review of Mani’s work highlighted key moments and influences, including the song “Fools Gold”, performances at Wembley Stadium and Alexandra Palace, legal battles, his fashion choices like bucket hats and Adidas, the album “Screamadelica”, and the band The Second Coming, concluding that this is what people have been anticipating.

Mani was last seen out in public at the funeral of Ricky Hatton at Manchester Cathedral last month.

I’ve been a huge fan of Mani for years! He’s a Manchester lad, born and bred, and he always had his heart set on music. He left school pretty young, at just sixteen, to really chase that dream, and of course, he found incredible success when he joined The Stone Roses back in the eighties. It was amazing to watch him rise to fame with them.

This musician played on both of The Stone Roses’ albums and was a member of the band until it broke up in 1996. He then joined Primal Scream, but in 2011, he left that band to reunite The Stone Roses.

Following the news of his death on Thursday, musicians and fans alike have been sharing heartfelt tributes.

Liam Gallagher expressed his shock and devastation upon learning of the passing of Mani, whom he considered a hero. He offered his condolences with ‘RIP RKID LG’.

Gary’s nephew shared a touching message, saying he believed his uncle was now with his beloved wife, Imelda, in heaven.

It is with great sadness that I share the news of my uncle Gary Mounfield’s passing. He was a member of the Stone Roses and passed away today.

Sending heartfelt thoughts to my twins and Uncle Greg during this difficult time. He’ll be happily reunited in heaven with his beloved wife, Imelda. Rest in peace, Manni. With love, your (sometimes!) exasperating nephew.

A fan shared on X (formerly Twitter), expressing their sadness over the passing of Mani, calling him ‘one of the greats’ and describing the news as shocking and upsetting.

I’m absolutely heartbroken to hear that Gary “Mani” Mounfield, the guitarist from The Stone Roses, has died at the age of 63. It’s just unbelievable. Rest in peace, Mani. I’m completely devastated.

‘This is such sad news – one of the greats of the Manchester music scene for many years. RIP Mani’

Rowetta, the singer from Happy Mondays, shared a heartfelt message on X, saying she’ll deeply miss someone and sending her love to his family, friends, and everyone who knew him.

While recording the Stone Roses’ album Second Coming over thirteen months at Rockfield Studios in Wales, Mani met and later married Imelda.

After Imelda received a cancer diagnosis, she and Mani organized several charity events to support important organizations like The Christie Hospital, The Stockport Charitable Trust, and Maggie’s.

They raised funds for charity by organising auctions of items from David Beckham and Oasis.

She explained to the BBC that she simply doesn’t want cancer and illness to dominate her thoughts constantly, as it can be completely overwhelming.

I needed a healthy distraction – something to focus on that wasn’t negative, and would help me feel more balanced.

I definitely have tough days where my illness really affects me, and I experience unpleasant side effects. But I also try to appear as normal as possible, so sometimes people don’t even realize I’m struggling.

Imelda passed away just weeks after Pete, the bassist for The Stone Roses, died at the age of 61, following a reported struggle with cancer.

The musician first played bass for a band from Manchester, but he left in 1987 to work at HMV. He felt he wasn’t good enough to continue playing with the group.
