Since new episodes of Doctor Who won’t air until Christmas 2026, fans are eagerly awaiting any news. While I’m excited about the podcast featuring Karen Gillan and Arthur Darvill, I’m even more looking forward to the new spinoff, The War Between the Land and the Sea. Recent comments from a producer on the show have only increased that excitement, as they’ve explained how this new series will compare to the original Doctor Who.
Pete McTighea, a writer and executive producer on the new show The War Between the Land and the Sea (created with Russell T. Davies), recently discussed the series with SFX Magazine. It will premiere on BBC One internationally starting December 7th, but viewers in the United States will need to wait and watch it on Disney+. McTighea’s recent comments about a potential spinoff have definitely piqued my interest in what’s next for the show.
While it’s connected to the Doctor Who universe and shares some of its core elements, this story is very much its own unique creation in terms of plot and atmosphere. We intentionally made it accessible, so even if you’ve never watched Doctor Who, you might still find it enjoyable and appreciate it for what it is.
It’s good that The War Between the Land and the Sea was made to attract new viewers, not just existing Doctor Who fans. Now that the Disney deal didn’t work out, fans should realize that if the show is going to succeed for another sixty years, it needs to reach a broader audience and gain more viewers.

Ultimately, The War Between the Land and the Sea isn’t likely to drastically change Doctor Who. Although it has a different feel, it seems the show will continue the tradition of incorporating meaningful and forward-thinking themes. Expect a series that delivers a powerful message, potentially addressing political or ethical issues – or both.
As a big fan, I’m really wondering what all this means for the BBC, and more importantly, who’s going to stream the show here in the US next. The BBC says they’ll keep making it even if they don’t get another partner, but honestly, I think we’ll all notice if they have to cut back on the budget. A little extra funding really makes a difference in quality, you know?

You can stream The War Between the Land and the Sea on Disney+, and new subscribers can sign up starting at $11.99 a month with ads. For an ad-free experience, the plan costs $18.99 monthly, or you can save 16% by paying $189.99 for an annual subscription. Check out the deal here!
I’m hoping Billie Piper’s return is handled as well as recent seasons of Doctor Who. If the new spinoff is successful, it might attract attention from other streaming services and lead them to pick up the show.
Like many fans, I’m excited for the return of Doctor Who in 2026 and the new episodes coming to Disney+ with The War Between the Land and the Sea. I’m also secretly hoping David Tennant might make another appearance! Ultimately, I’m looking forward to seeing how the show expands on the Doctor Who story.
