After Disney acquired Lucasfilm, Star Wars saw a surge in new content, with five films released between 2015 and 2019 – almost doubling the number of Star Wars movies made since the original in 1977. However, there haven’t been any theatrical releases since 2019. That’s about to change, with at least two new Star Wars films planned for 2026 and beyond, and filmmakers like Tom Cruise and Steven Spielberg reportedly eager to be involved.
As someone who’s been following this project closely, I was fascinated to learn from a recent New York Times interview with director Shawn Levy just how much buzz is surrounding the new film. Apparently, the cast isn’t the only draw – we’re talking major A-list stars like Ryan Gosling, but also visits from legends like Steven Spielberg and Tom Cruise! And get this – Cruise didn’t just visit; Levy told me he actually grabbed a camera, rolled up his sleeves, and even filmed a scene in the mud! It’s clear this production is attracting some serious talent, both in front of and behind the camera, and Levy shared…
Steven Spielberg visited last week, and now Tom Cruise is filming, unfortunately at the expense of his good shoes.
Given Steven Spielberg and George Lucas have worked together for years, it’s no surprise Spielberg visited the set. He was probably curious to see how the new film was building on the Star Wars universe his friend created nearly 50 years ago. It’s easy to picture Spielberg and director Levy having a fascinating discussion about the franchise’s history and where it’s headed – I wish we could have been a fly on the wall!
And then one day, Tom Cruise flew in on a helicopter.
You know, Shawn Levy told this hilarious story about joking with Tom Cruise that he should just grab a camera and film something himself. And Cruise, being Cruise, actually did it! Levy said he ended up waist-deep in muck – literally up to his ankles in mud and pond water – filming a lightsaber duel. Honestly, though, is anyone surprised? This is the guy who does his own stunts, throws himself off cliffs… of course he’d leap at the chance to direct a little bit of Star Wars!
I heard Tom Cruise was just visiting the set of Star Wars: Starfighter and playfully grabbed a camera – so don’t get your hopes up for him actually being in the movie! Though, honestly, we’ve seen so many celebs pop up in Star Wars before, you never know! But get this: when we’re all watching Starfighter in 2027 and enjoying that epic lightsaber battle, we’ll have someone special to thank. And here’s what the director had to say…
Now, when you see the movie, you’ll know that part of it was shot by Tom. I mean, how cool is that?
I’m really looking forward to the upcoming Star Wars projects! While we have a bit of a wait for Star Wars: Starfighter, The Mandalorian and Grogu will be back in theaters soon, marking Star Wars’ official return. It’s going to be a fantastic time for all Star Wars fans, whether you’re a longtime enthusiast or new to the galaxy far, far away.
