I was on Homes Under The Hammer – we were barely paid, got no help from producers and I was shaken by life-changing news during filming
As an ardent fan of Homes Under The Hammer, I can’t help but feel a tinge of sympathy mixed with admiration for Violet, who bravely shared her experience on the show. Having followed the program for years, I’ve always wondered about the behind-the-scenes stories, and Violet’s account certainly paints a different picture than what we see on our screens.

As I stood before the cameras, ready to unveil my latest real estate project, an unexpected turn of events sent shockwaves through me during production.
Viewers adore the trio – Martin Roberts, Dion Dublin, and Martel Maxwell – on their much-loved television program.
The BBC program chronicles the journey of houses, starting from when they’re sold at auction, right up to their impressive makeovers by their new owners.
A viewer of the program was curious about other people’s experiences participating in it and posed a question on the Mumsnet forum: “Have any of you appeared on Homes Under the Hammer?”
I’m currently binge-watching several episodes, looking for some inspiration. By any chance, has anyone appeared on this show before? If so, I’d be interested to hear about your experience.
Later, Violet chose to share her show experience from a few years back, during which she decided to express herself openly.
She wrote: ‘I went on it a few years ago. Was approached at the auction just after we signed the papers for exchange and asked, very politely, if we’d like to be on the programme.
‘We agreed to a phone call and they followed up and filmed us a couple of weeks later.
‘Lucy turned up and was very friendly, but professional.
‘They followed up regularly and came back and filmed only when we were ready.’
However, Violet seemed unimpressed and felt it important for others to understand the complete narrative, including the events happening backstage.
She mentioned, “Our conclusion was postponed due to my battle with breast cancer. They offered to incorporate this information into the final broadcast, but I chose not to.”
‘They were always pleasant and professional, never pushy.
‘We got £100 for each of the two filming days, which are quite long.
In summary, there were no additional perks or price reductions available for our items or offerings. Transparency was our priority when it came to pricing.
‘I very much doubt most people on there are.’
