I Thought Being Mortal Incident Was Funny

In a reflection, Bill Murray is considering the accusations of sexual misconduct that prevented the release of his movie “Being Mortal” in 2022.

During a recent conversation with The New York Times, Murray confessed that the event from long ago continues to linger in his mind up until now.

When queried about whether he contemplated the event while portraying inappropriate behavior towards a man in his latest movie, The Friend, he stated, “I seldom let more than a few days or weeks pass without reflecting on what transpired in Being Mortal.

Once more, Murray found himself embroiled in controversy during the promotion of his latest movie. He caused a stir by unexpectedly kissing his co-star Naomi Watts on the set of Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen without any prior prompting.

In a recent conversation, he revealed details about the events preceding the grievance concerning his actions during the production of “Being Mortal,” initially intended as the directorial premiere of actor Aziz Ansari, prior to its cancellation.

Murray mentioned that the movie was filmed during the peak of the coronavirus outbreak, with everyone on set donning masks and confined to a single room as they listened to an absurd scenario unfold.

Before describing the incident, he began by explaining, “I’m not sure why I did it, but it was something I had previously done to someone else. I found it amusing, and each time it occurred, it was still funny.

Murray clarified that, even with masks on, he shared a kiss with an unidentified female team member by pressing his mask against hers. He emphasized that it wasn’t as if he physically touched her, but rather, it was more like he kissed her through the protective barrier.

He mentioned, “‘She wasn’t an acquaintance’,” and he shared that they had been meeting for lunch almost every week prior to the event.

Murray expressed that he felt like he had been grilled or subjected to unfair treatment following the accusations against him. He believed the actions taken by Human Resources during investigations and subsequent arbitration processes seemed biased towards him.

It transpired that there were prior circumstances, and I was taken aback, as there had been no communication about it. There was no attempt at reconciliation or discussion of any kind.

He advised against resorting to such a bizarre form of dispute resolution. He emphasized that if anyone recommends arbitration, they should reconsider their suggestion vehemently. This is because, contrary to popular belief, it does not deliver justice as promised.

Murray criticized Disney’s Human Resources department as being “more firm-handed than some foreign nations,” and he described the decision to abandon the film as a “huge letdown.

In 2022, it appears that Murray resolved an investigation by paying a sum of $100,000 to the woman involved.

In addition, the interviewer brought up instances where the actor from The Royal Tenenbaums has faced allegations of behaving aggressively, violently, or rudely towards his fellow actors.

There was an instance where he was rumored to have thrown a broken ashtray (specifically a glass one) at his co-star Richard Dreyfuss during the filming of What About Bob?.

He said, “Feel free to share the tale repeatedly, but I’m convinced it won’t be factual.” Then, he asserted that he had thrown the ashtray upwards, expecting it to break upon hitting the ceiling.

‘If I’d thrown it at Dreyfuss, I’d have hit him,’ he said defiantly.

In her 2022 memoir titled “Dying of Politeness,” Gina Davis alleged that Murray directed insults at her, a claim made in the presence of over 300 people on the film set.

Murray responded to Davis’ claim with just one word: ‘Outrageous.’

Later, he asserted that an organized attempt was carried out to unearth awkward incidents from his past, allegedly in response to the accusation leveled against him during the “Being Mortal” discussion.

When someone experiences something similar to what I went through in “Being Mortal”, it seems as though people hunt for evidence to confirm that they are truly a horrific individual – an unquestionably wicked person, claims Murray.

Throughout his extensive professional life, spanning countless encounters with individuals, it is possible for detectives to identify only a handful (about half a dozen) instances where he may have appeared less than favorable.

‘If you really worked, you’d probably come up with a couple dozen,’ he added.

This past month, I found myself at the receiving end of criticism from fans and viewers of Watch What Happens Live, following an incident where I seemed to plant an unasked-for kiss on Naomi Watts.

In the question-and-answer segment of the program, a spectator phoned in to ask the 56-year-old actress from Mulholland Dr. about her preferred screen kiss.

Before she had a chance to respond, Murray moved swiftly towards her, cupped her face with his hands, and it seemed as if he planted a kiss on her lips. However, his head obscured her face from the camera’s view.

In the past, Murray and Watts had worked together in the 2014 film St. Vincent, a blend of drama and comedy. Later, as they parted ways, Murray nodded approvingly towards the camera.

Later on, Watts noticed that there seemed to be lipstick on the person’s face and asked, “Could it be that I turned red?

Murray just stared into the camera and stated, ‘That was too easy.’

People criticized him heavily on social media for placing Watts in that situation, but she hasn’t made any comments about it since then, as far as I know.
