People often make fun of theater kids, but I’m really proud to be one! Growing up with theater gave me a strong sense of belonging, and it’s still how I connect with and make friends as an adult. I always enjoy new movie musicals, and I recently had the amazing experience of watching both Wicked films with a group of those friends at private screenings.
Watching the first Wicked movie at home was great, especially since it’s now available on Amazon Prime. But seeing it with friends was even more meaningful. We had recently lost a friend and were all still dealing with grief, and being together—especially during the song ‘For Good’—created a safe and comforting space to share those emotions.
Wicked: For Good’s Title Song Touched A Whole Group Of Friends
The popular memes about the movie Wicked really resonated with what happened when my friends and I watched it. As someone who defends Wicked Act II, I expected “For Good” to be incredibly moving, and it was. The song’s lyrics, written by Stephen Schwartz, beautifully capture how important friendships are and how they shape us into the people we become.
Everyone in the audience felt the sadness of losing our friend, and it was especially strong during the movie’s main song. The words seemed to capture exactly how many of us were feeling, especially during Elphaba’s part when she sings:
We might not have another chance to see each other in this life. Before we say goodbye, I want you to know that I am who I am because of everything you’ve taught me. You’ll always stay with me, a lasting impression on my heart.
As a huge musical fan, it’s amazing to see Wicked doing so well at the box office – it proves this story really resonates with a lot more people than just those of us in the theater world! Honestly, seeing a show I’ve loved since I was a kid capture the feeling of loss so beautifully was incredibly moving.
The movie was incredibly emotional—many of us were crying, especially during that one scene! Thankfully, because it was a private screening, we could talk openly about how we were feeling without feeling self-conscious. Beyond the emotional release of watching the film, those conversations were really helpful too. We all wished our friend who passed away could have been there with us, but we definitely felt his presence throughout the evening.
