I Saw Lilo & Stitch For The First Time And This One Thing Shocked Me
There are certain Disney movies you believe you’ve already seen, thinking you must have caught all the classics. But then, when you press play, you realize you’ve missed out on watching “Lilo & Stitch”. I guess the reason I never saw this film is that it was released during my teenage years, and it was a movie my younger sister adored, but I didn’t consider it something I would enjoy at that time. Yet, I thought I must have watched it eventually.
In 2025, viewing “Lilo & Stitch” made me acknowledge that I hadn’t watched it previously, and I felt it was necessary to explore other remarkable Disney films I thought were beyond my age range at the time. It’s likely there are many excellent movies I overlooked due to preconceived notions. Watching “Lilo & Stitch” proved to be a charming film with elements that surprised me.
These details gave the film depth.
Warning Lilo & Stitch spoilers are ahead. Proceed with caution.
I Wasn’t Expecting Stitch’s Backstory In Lilo & Stitch
From the advertising for Lilo & Stitch, I had initially thought that the movie bore a resemblance to E.T. due to its storyline about an adorable alien stranded on Earth and forming a bond with a young girl. However, what I didn’t foresee was that Stitch is actually a villain designed for destruction and chaos. Contrary to my expectations, the movie presents Stitch as a highly intelligent being who finds himself on Earth not so much as a clumsy alien struggling to adapt to a new world, but rather as one who cunningly attempts to elude capture and avoid being destroyed.
He possesses the intellectual flexibility to assimilate into Earth’s culture, yet due to his upbringing, he chooses to demolish anything that does not align with his predetermined plan. I found it intriguing how Stitch was initially not a domesticated creature but eventually transformed into one, adding depth to the film, and it doesn’t merely attempt to mimic other popular alien movies.
This observation adds to the uniqueness of the movie “Lilo & Stitch” as it explores an unusual theme: a monster-like creature transforming into a human. In contrast to numerous films portraying humanity’s darkness, heartwarming movies like “Lilo & Stitch” are crucial for demonstrating that even seemingly chaotic creatures like Stitch have the capacity for goodness.

This Made His Relationship With Lilo More Special Than Expected
Lilo and Stitch share a bond as they are both misfits struggling to find their place. Lilo feels lonely due to being an orphan without much family, while Stitch stands out as odd among people her age. Moreover, Stitch is regarded as an abomination on his own planet. Essentially, they are two unique individuals who don’t quite fit into the societies they inhabit. Additionally, it’s worth mentioning that Stitch was artificially created rather than having a biological family.
In the beginning of the movie, Stitch initially behaves hostile towards both Nani and Lilo, causing various issues that make it difficult for Nani to secure employment and appear as a suitable caregiver. However, over time, his feelings towards them soften and he develops a deep affection for them instead.
As a cinephile, I find that in Lilo & Stitch, it’s not about an immediate bond formation between characters, but rather Lilo having to put in the effort to win over Stitch’s trust and affection. This dynamic resonates with me because it mirrors real-life relationships where someone has had a challenging past and responds by acting out or being difficult towards the person who’s trying to shower them with love. Whether the writers intended this depth in Lilo and Stitch’s relationship, or simply thought it would add humor by making Stitch a challenge for Lilo, it certainly adds an authentic touch to their bond.
Indeed, what strikes me as endearing is that it’s a bond between two individuals who are somewhat outliers, yet they have found each other. What makes their connection even more enchanting is the fact that one might not fully comprehend the other, yet they choose to stand by each other regardless.

I Felt A Deeper Connection To The Message Of Family Because Of Stitch’s History
In essence, “Lilo & Stitch” revolves around the concept of a makeshift family. Lilo, Nani, and Stitch form a unique bond, creating their own dynamic. The film’s theme of ‘ohana,’ or family, resonates strongly as it showcases Stitch’s journey to find his place in the world. Both Lilo and Nani have faced difficult circumstances, particularly with the loss of their parents. Despite Nani’s best efforts to care for Lilo, she isn’t the most skilled parent. However, the movie suggests that although Nani might not be the ideal parent figure, she is family to Lilo, and more importantly, exactly what Lilo needs.
Throughout the movie, Stitch resists the concept of having a family, yet eventually finds himself embracing it by discovering affection for being included. Just like Nani and Lilo, he comes to rely on his newfound family as well. The film ultimately emphasizes the importance of an unorthodox family unit that manages to thrive despite its challenges. What truly matters is their unity. This theme of a non-traditional family resonates strongly, often being a recurring motif in heartwarming family films. Family isn’t solely defined by blood; it’s the love that binds them together.

Lilo & Stitch, To Me, Is A Love Letter To Outsiders
What really caught my attention in this Disney classic is that Lilo and Stitch have faced challenges in their respective realms. Yet, they discover solace and reinvent themselves through their friendship. While they might not resonate with those living beyond their worlds, their bond is strong. Their unique personalities stem from their outsider experiences.
In my perspective, I’m far from the stereotype of an ordinary girl, and that’s exactly why I possess qualities such as charm, kindness, courage, and a passion for life and knowledge. It’s my uniqueness that makes me stand out. By the end of the movie, Lilo & Stitch, it was Stitch’s harmful behaviors that transformed into his strengths. What people initially disliked and judged about him, he turned into something positive. This outsider’s love letter underscores the idea that what sets someone or something apart is also what makes them extraordinary and unique. It serves as a reminder for not just little children like me, but everyone, to embrace our differences without fear.

I Thought The Movie Was Cute, But Deeper Than I Was Expecting, And That Makes It An Underrated Disney Movie To Me
Like numerous Disney films, Lilo & Stitch is both entertaining and carries deeper messages suitable for children. The storyline about a creature engineered for destruction learning the importance of love is particularly impactful. It underscores that even seemingly unlovable entities can be embraced with affection. This message extends to the idea that nothing – whether it’s damaged, destructive, or seemingly beyond repair – is incapable of giving and receiving love.
The movie carries several themes, yet the one in question struck a chord with me. At times, individuals may believe they aren’t built for affection like Stitch, but there are instances when you encounter people who guide you on how to give and receive love, even appreciating your imperfections.
I strongly recommend watching “Lilo & Stitch,” whether it’s the original animated or the live-action adaptation; it’s a Disney movie that I believe everyone should experience at least once.
