I Read The Supergirl Story The New Movie Is Based On, And There’s One Moment I Really Hope Is Included

As a big fan of superhero films, I’ve noticed a lot of them draw from multiple comic book storylines – like how The Batman (2022) really blended elements from Year One, The Long Halloween, and Ego. But with the upcoming Supergirl movie, it’s a bit different. It’s largely based on the miniseries Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow by Tom King and Bilquis Evely. In fact, the movie was originally going to have the same title as the comic!

The new Supergirl movie won’t likely follow the Woman of Tomorrow comic book exactly. We know this because Jason Momoa is playing Lobo, a character who wasn’t in the original story. But if the movie stays true to the main plot points of the comic, there’s one scene I’m really hoping to see.

The Specific Moment From Supergirl: Woman Of Tomorrow That Got Me

Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow is a fantastic story that combines classic superhero action with a grand, space-spanning adventure. The story centers around Supergirl, also known as Kara Zor-El, teaming up with an alien girl named Ruthye to track down the killer of her father, Krem of the Yellow Hills. What makes this story unique is that it’s told through Ruthye’s eyes, as an older woman recounting her experiences. Issue #6 also offers a poignant glimpse into Supergirl’s own history.

Unlike her cousin Superman, who was sent to Earth as a baby, Kara was already a teenager when Krypton was destroyed, meaning she remembered life on her home planet. She survived the initial explosion because Argo City broke away from the rest of Krypton. Her father, Zor-El, created an artificial atmosphere to allow the survivors to breathe, but they still faced difficulties.

Kara’s mother, Alura In-Ze, passed away shortly after Argo City started drifting through space. Of the 18,000 Kryptonians who initially survived on Argo City, 13,000 perished when exposure to yellow sunlight transformed the planet’s surface into Kryptonite. Though the remaining Kryptonians built a lead shield for protection, it was destroyed by a meteor shower a year later, leaving everyone on Argo City facing certain death. Determined to save his daughter, Zor-El built a spaceship to send her away, and told her:

Time will pass quickly, and everything will change – this place, even the stars. You’ll look back on a life filled with both hardship and happiness. And maybe, when you’re older, you’ll think of me, your father. No matter what life brings, or what pain you face, you’ll always be my little girl.

Were you moved to tears? A month passed, and the ship was prepared. Zor-El wished Kara well, telling her to be good, just as her mother had said before she lost consciousness. And with that, Kara was sent away from Argo City, ultimately landing on Earth, just like her cousin – you probably know the story from there.

Why I Hope This Moment Is Included In The Supergirl Movie

Milly Alcock plays Kara Zor-El in the DC Universe, and we learned in Superman that she often travels to planets with red suns to drink, as this weakens her powers. However, the first Supergirl trailer reveals this isn’t just for fun – it’s how she deals with the pain of losing her home and people. In a scene from the trailer, when asked about the devastation she experienced, Kara quotes a line from the Woman of Tomorrow comic: “Krypton didn’t die in a day. The gods are not that kind,” highlighting the lasting trauma she carries.

I’m really hoping the new Supergirl movie explores Kara’s experiences when Argo City broke away from Krypton. Specifically, I’d love to see a scene where David Krumholtz, as Zor-El, says the same heartfelt lines to Kara before she leaves in the spaceship. Since the movie is tackling some heavy themes, it would be powerful to show this loving goodbye between father and daughter. It could also provide a nice contrast to the more complicated portrayal of Superman’s parents in the DC Universe.

The new movie Supergirl will be released in theaters on June 26, 2026. Clayface will follow on September 11th, and Lanterns is currently scheduled to debut on HBO late the following summer.
