I May Destroy You’s Michaela Coel announces new BBC drama

As a fan who has been captivated by Michaela Coel’s mesmerizing performances and groundbreaking storytelling, this latest announcement about her upcoming project, “First Day on Earth,” left me absolutely thrilled! Her ability to craft such intricate, heartfelt narratives that resonate deeply with audiences is truly a gift.

I May Destroy You star Michaela Coel has announced her latest BBC project.

In the upcoming series titled “First Day on Earth“, the actor will assume multiple roles – scriptwriting, executive producing, and acting. This captivating ten-part production revolves around a novelist who embarks on a journey to rekindle her relationship with her long-lost father in Ghana. Filming for this heartwarming story is set to commence next year.

The British author, Henri (Coel), finds herself in a standstill. Her work has slowed to a halt and her romantic situation remains unfulfilling, as suggested by the show’s synopsis.

When presented with an opportunity to work on a movie in Ghana, West Africa – the birthplace of her parents and home to her estranged father – she finds herself drawn to the prospect of reuniting with her family roots and the land that shapes her heritage, making it impossible for her to resist.

However, upon her arrival, neither the job nor her father turn out as she anticipated. Instead, Henri encounters peril and deceit, forges fresh relationships, discards her preconceptions, and establishes a new self-image – one that may fortify her, but could potentially shatter her instead.

The show, set to broadcast on BBC One and be accessible via BBC iPlayer, is a joint production by HBO and is created by A24 and Various Artists Limited, the same company responsible for “I May Destroy You,” “Such Brave Girls,” and “Juice.”

Coel expressed her joy about the project in a press release, stating: “It’s a pleasure to collaborate once more with VAL, BBC, HBO, and now A24 as well. I am confident that with their collective talent, thoughtfulness, and skill, the show is in capable hands. I’d like to thank everyone involved.”

Ahead of the Edinburgh TV Festival, Lindsay Salt, head of BBC Drama, expressed: “Michaela is an extraordinary artist whose work has always caught my attention. ‘I May Destroy You’ was a significant factor in my decision to join the BBC!”

“Michaela has crafted an extraordinary series in ‘First Day on Earth’ – unique, sincere, laugh-out-loud funny, and poetically told, all in her distinctive style. I’m eager for everyone to experience it!”

On Earth for the First Time, signifies that this is Coel’s initial television production in a span of four years. The actor gained popularity through her Channel 4 comedy titled Chewing Gum, which was adapted from her 2012 stage play with the same name.

The series titled “I May Destroy You” debuted in the year 2020, garnering Coel a total of four BAFTA TV Awards and an Emmy. Following this success, she has made guest appearances in both “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” and “Mr & Mrs Smith.”

In the upcoming project, Coel is set to star alongside Anne Hathaway in a sweeping pop melodrama named “Mother Mary“. This film explores the dynamic between a musician and a renowned fashion designer, offering an intriguing portrayal of their relationship.

First Day on Earth doesn’t have a release date yet.
