HBO is launching a new comedy series called I Love LA to follow up Girls. Early reviews are giving audiences a first look at what critics think of the show. Girls previously starred Lena Dunham as Hannah Horvath, a young woman trying to figure out life with her friends in New York City.
The HBO show Girls ran for six seasons and was often described as a modern take on Sex and the City, geared towards millennials.
The popular show Girls is making way for a new comedy called I Love LA. Set to premiere on HBO November 2nd, the show is already getting positive reviews, with an 80% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Critics are calling it one of the funniest shows of 2025 and are especially impressed with Rachel Sennott’s creation, believing it will attract a broad viewership.
Megan Sennott is a comedian known for her appearances in projects like I Used to Be Funny, Bodies Bodies Bodies, Bottoms, Saturday Night Live, and The Idol. Her work on The Idol, starring Abel Tesfaye, also known as The Weeknd, had already caught the attention of HBO.
In 2024, HBO purchased a pilot created by Sennott, which she then developed into the series I Love LA. Like Lena Dunham with Girls, Sennott is the star, writer, executive producer, and creator of the show – handling many roles both on and off screen.
The cast of I Love LA includes Sennott, Odessa A’zion, Jordan Firstman, True Whitaker, and Josh Hutcherson, known from The Hunger Games. Moses Ingram and Lauren Holt have recurring roles. Guest stars in the eight-episode first season include Leighton Meester of Gossip Girl and Elijah Wood, famous for his work in Lord of the Rings.
This show follows a group of friends who have relied on each other for a long time and are reconnecting after being apart for a while. It’s geared towards younger and older millennials, and features actors from both generations. While actress Sennott is a millennial herself, many people feel her humor and outlook really resonate with Gen Z.
Even before it airs on HBO, I Love LA is already getting positive attention, thanks to a high score on Rotten Tomatoes.
Even though Girls faced criticism during its six seasons – including complaints about a lack of diversity among the actors – it consistently earned high ratings on Rotten Tomatoes, currently averaging 89%.
As a big fan of shows like Girls and Sex and the City, I was really excited when HBO launched The Sex Lives of College Girls – it felt like a fresh take on that same kind of vibe, created by Mindy Kaling. So I was pretty bummed to hear it got canceled after just three seasons, especially since critics actually loved it!
The cable network is hoping its new show, I Love LA, will be a success. Whether it lasts as long as popular series like Girls and Sex and the City, both of which ran for six seasons, remains to be seen. Early reviews are very positive, but now the show needs viewers to tune in on Sunday nights to confirm its popularity.
I Love LA premieres Sunday, November 2 at 10:30 p.m. EST on HBO.
