I Know What You Did Last Summer reboot casts Riverdale and Outer Banks stars

As a die-hard fan of the original “I Know What You Did Last Summer” film franchise, I am beyond excited about the upcoming reboot and the fresh cast that has been announced! The prospect of Jennifer Love Hewitt and Freddie Prinze Jr. potentially reprising their roles as Julie James and Ray Bronson, respectively, is a dream come true. And the addition of young talents like Camila Mendes and Madelyn Cline to the roster is an intriguing twist that adds an air of freshness to the story.

According to The Hollywood Reporter’s exclusive report, the cast for the summer reboot of “I Know What You Did Last Summer” has been finalized.

Besides Jennifer Love Hewitt and Freddie Prinze Jr., who are in discussions to return as Julie James and Ray Bronson, respectively, in the upcoming remake, the new cast includes Camila Mendes and Madelyn Cline from “Riverdale” and “Outer Banks,” respectively, as the main female characters.

I’m excited to share that there are ongoing talks about bringing Sarah Pidgeon (from “Stereophonic” and a Tony Award winner), Tyriq Withers (“Atlanta” star), and Jonah Hauer-King, fresh off his role in Disney’s live-action “The Little Mermaid,” to join the cast.

There is currently no information available on which roles the actors, specifically Cline and Mendes, will take on. However, it’s safe to assume that their characters will be based on the original characters Helen Shivers and Julie James from the 1997 slasher film, but with some creative liberties.

If Hewitt reappears as Julie in a potential new I Know What You Did Last Summer installment, it’s only natural that Cline and Mendes would be fresh, unique characters within the same cinematic world as those initially brought to life by Prinze Jr., Hewitt, Ryan Phillippe, and Sarah Michelle Gellar. However, I wouldn’t find it surprising if these newcomers bore some resemblance to their predecessors from the first film. Additionally, it could add an intriguing layer to the story if Cline were to portray Ray and Julie’s daughter.

In the 1997 film, Gellar’s character Helen and Phillippe’s Barry Cox fell victim to Ben Wilkins, or The Fisherman. However, the outcomes of Ray and Julie were uncertain. In the 1998 sequel “I Still Know What You Did Last Summer,” Ray and Julie tied the knot. Yet, their last encounter with Ben saw him unexpectedly pulling Julie under the bed, leaving her fate unclear.

Hewitt and Prinze Jr. didn’t appear in the straight-to-video continuation named “I’ll Always Know What You Did Last Summer.” Should they decide to join Sony’s upcoming sequel, the scriptwriters could dismiss the controversial ending of “I Still Know What You Did Last Summer” as a dream sequence for an effortless explanation.

The upcoming film, scheduled for a theater debut on July 18, 2025, will be helmed by Jennifer Kaytin Robinson, who previously directed “Do Revenge.” She collaborated with Sam Lansky on the screenplay, which is an adaptation of a script penned by Leah McKendrick.
