Ari Aster shares his thoughts on the divided early responses to his newest movie titled “Eddington,” which portrays a tense standoff between a small-town sheriff and a mayor in May 2020.
In a conversation with The New York Times, Aster muses about the initial response to Eddington.
Aster reminisces on how people initially reacted to the revelations made by Eddington in their discussion with The New York Times.
Have you read reviews of the film out of Cannes?
While working on this press, I’ve avoided reading reviews as I know myself well enough to realize they could potentially draw me in, much like quicksand. I prefer waiting until after I’ve completed my work before diving into other people’s opinions. We anticipated that what we were creating might be divisive, but it remains uncertain if that’s the case. However, I’ve picked up on some murmurs suggesting as much.
The movie has sparked lively conversations at the gatherings I’ve attended. There seems to be much debate about its political undertones as well.
Oh, really?
Some individuals have shared their perspective that the movie seems to portray liberal characters more harshly compared to conservative ones.
I’m not sure how preaching to people who already agree with us is going to help. Instead, I’m more interested in exploring the bigger picture. It seems like most of us are feeling disempowered, scared, and discouraged about our ability to make a difference in the world or challenge those in power.
What kind of reaction to the movie do you hope people will have?
I’m yearning for more of what I see in art to echo my experiences. frankly, I’m quite concerned and scared, and I believe many others are too. It’s vital that we address this issue openly. I’ve expressed this thought before, but I truly believe that we need to reconnect with one another if we hope to exert any collective power.
