It’s hard to believe another year of films is almost over! Having seen over 70 movies released in 2025 so far, I wanted to re-watch some of my favorites before settling on my top ten. While that list is still taking shape, I’ve picked five films from the first half of the year that really stood out. My opinion of Sinners especially has changed after further consideration.

I Rewatched 5 Of My Favorite Movies Of 2025, And Here’s How It Went
Beyond Sinners, I recently caught a diverse lineup of films. I was really struck by Stephen King’s The Life of Chuck, James Gunn’s big-budget Superman, the Netflix hit KPop Demon Hunters, and Celine Song’s Materialists. Each one genuinely stuck with me after the first viewing. It wasn’t just the impressive filmmaking and stories – it was the experience of sharing them with people I care about, and how each film, despite being different, delivered a truly memorable moment.
I initially loved The Life Of Chuck more than Sinners because it felt so uplifting and moving. However, after watching it again, it didn’t have the same impact, and parts of it felt a bit slow. I still think Superman is a great beginning to the new DC Universe, but I don’t anticipate rewatching it very often – I’ll likely just appreciate it for what it is.
I still feel the same way about KPop Demon Hunters – it’s a fantastic animated movie that I know I’ll enjoy repeatedly, and I’m not getting tired of the music. Materialists still has a strong emotional impact on me, but the discussions and controversy surrounding it have slightly diminished my overall enjoyment.

Why I Think Sinners Crawled To The Top Of My List
My opinion of Sinners changed the most. Unlike the other films on my list, it was the first one I saw – back in April – and I don’t think I fully appreciated it at the time. I enjoyed it, but it wasn’t until later that I realized how truly perfect it is (our review, which gave it 5 stars, was spot on!).
I think my disappointment stemmed from the initial hype surrounding the movie and my preconceived notions about it. I expected Sinners to be much scarier than it turned out to be, so having the entire story unfold at a single location – the juke joint – felt a little flat. It also felt like the movie tried to address too many themes and ideas, ultimately taking on more than it could effectively handle.
After watching it again, I completely changed my mind about this movie. I especially loved that most of the story takes place in the juke joint, and I was surprised by how grand and cinematic it felt despite being set in a single location. I also realized what initially seemed confusing actually adds depth and complexity to the film. It’s a movie you can watch repeatedly and always discover something new – I was particularly touched by its themes of legacy on my second viewing, and I’m sure there are still more nuances to find. When I’m deciding on a favorite movie, how often I can rewatch it is important, and this one excels in that area with its memorable scenes, music, and dialogue.
Some movies really grow on you with a second viewing, and I’m so glad I saw this one before the year ended. It’s easily one of my favorites now, and I think it’s a truly special film that will be remembered as a classic.
