I Just Keep Watching Hulu’s New Virgin Dating Show Are You My First?, But It Has Two Obvious Problems

I really enjoy watching reality dating shows, and thankfully, there’s always plenty to select from. Among them, Hulu’s unique show titled “Are You My First?” definitely catches my attention. On the upcoming 2025 TV schedule, we also have “Bachelor in Paradise” running, multiple versions of “90 Day Fiancé,” and numerous dating series on Netflix like “Perfect Match.” These shows might even rekindle your interest in the genre. At the moment, however, I’m deeply engrossed in Hulu’s new show, despite noticing two issues with it already.

Title “Are You My First?” (now streaming on Hulu with a subscription) is helmed by past Bachelor Nation stars Kaitlyn Bristowe and Colton Underwood. They’re guiding an entire cast of individuals who are yet to lose their virginity. These young singles embark on dates and engage in challenges reminiscent of other reality dating shows, but this leads me to the first – and arguably most significant – problem with the show.

Problem 1: There’s No Way To Know Everyone Is Actually A Virgin

The storyline of “Are You My First?” relies on every participant claiming they’ve never had sex before, but verifying this is impossible due to personal reasons such as medical history, religious beliefs, or other factors. Each contestant has their own unique reason for maintaining celibacy, and the producers must trust their honesty regarding this matter, which could potentially be a significant risk.

In response to being asked about ensuring honesty, executive producer Peter Geist admitted, “We strive to maintain authenticity in our productions.

It’s quite uncertain about their honesty since our involvement allowed us to understand them deeply. There could always be instances where they might not have been completely truthful with us.

As a cinephile, I must admit, it seems those in decision-making positions had grasped the circumstances quite well. Their words hinted that they deemed the risk an acceptable one to take. The Executive Producer went on to elaborate:

A large number of them openly and sincerely explained their reasons for being virgins, which seemed perfectly logical. During the filming process, it was amusing because compared to other dating shows (like ‘Milf Manor’ in my previous experience), it was evident that these individuals were virgins.

Indeed, it appears that the actors in Are You My First? present a more subtle, less overtly sexual atmosphere compared to those on shows like Love Island and Too Hot to Handle. It seems they manage to convey an abstinent vibe regardless of their approach.

From my perspective as a movie critic, it’s worth noting that the series I’ve observed thus far hasn’t delved into a clear definition of virginity or addressed the concept of “reformed virgins.” Moreover, it’s evident that individuals have varying interpretations of intimacy, as we’ve witnessed in one storyline from the concluded season of “The Ultimatum: Queer Love“.

Problem 2: Colton Underwood Is Not A Good Narrator

As an avid fan of “The Bachelor” for quite some time, I must confess that having Colton Underwood, who is famously known as the “virgin Bachelor,” and Kaitlyn Bristowe hosting together was one of the factors that first attracted me to the show titled “Are You My First.

It’s understandable that many were puzzled by Hulu choosing the ex-Bachelor (Underwood), as I was too, given his conduct following his tumultuous split with Cassie Randolph. During this time, she claimed he stalked her and sought a restraining order against him. Despite this, Underwood is scheduled to appear on the upcoming season of The Traitors, where he may not be the most contentious Season 4 competitor.

To put it simply, despite the creative humor in the script, Colton Underwood doesn’t seem to be a good fit for this role. The frequent virgin-themed puns and references might work well with the right comedic actor, but in this case, they fall flat. I appreciate the clever names like “Virgin Sacrifices” for eliminations and “V cards” for date cards, but some jokes become tiresome due to repetition without enough comedic payoff.

In the initial episodes I’ve seen, Kaitlyn Bristowe has repeated her intention to “be kind” on several occasions while sharing information “if this is our first time,” and some of her jokes are quite groan-inducing, in a very unappealing manner. Colton Underwood appears to lack the necessary spark to convincingly deliver lines such as:

  • I’m Colton Underwood, and if you’re confused to why the voiceover just swapped from woman to man, you’ve just lost your two-narrators virginity.
  • After the initial chats, the big question is where are they gonna get laid tonight? By ‘they,’ I mean the virgins’ heads, getting innocently laid down onto soft pillows.

The dialogue in those two scenes appears only in the initial episode, which is when top-notch writing should be seen at its best. It’s also quite clear that Colton is reading his lines off-script, and even during conversations with other cast members on the show, many of his lines were later re-recorded separately.

When a sound edit stands out so starkly, and the host’s tone is significantly less vibrant compared to the music, action, and other elements, it undeniably detaches me from the program. Regardless of whether what he’s discussing might not be contending for accolades.

Still, Are You My First? Has Sucked Me In, And I Can’t Stop Watching

Although there are two significant issues, I continue to watch the new Hulu show. I believe the producers have assembled an excellent cast. Rachael’s character intrigues me due to her condition called vaginismus preventing sexual activity, and Farha (as depicted above) is a virgin with an OnlyFans account. Godwin also provides plenty of entertainment, while Madi catches my attention right away as well.

It’s intriguing to watch young, single individuals navigate their relationships in this unique setting, facing obstacles and dating with a degree of modesty. There’s no hint of inappropriate behavior like tongue-kissing or daredevil triple kisses, which might make you wonder which TV show I recently completed.

As a movie enthusiast, I must confess that during an early-season round of Truth or Dare, it seemed no one had the guts to opt for the dare challenge!

In the intriguing world of “Are You My First?”, I ponder if any cast member might embark on this significant journey with another contestant. Frankly, I’m not privy to those personal details, and I believe it’s neither here nor there. What truly captivates me is the unique concept of the show, even though I acknowledge its premise may have some flaws. It would be intriguing to find out if this series gets a second season and whether Colton Underwood and Kaitlyn Bristowe make a comeback.
