I Finally Watched Nick Offerman’s Sovereign, And I Think It’s One Of The Best Movies This Year

As of today, I’ve seen 119 films scheduled for release in 2025. While some have been excellent, many were disappointing. Recently, I was really surprised by a movie called Sovereign, which I found while browsing Hulu. It stars Nick Offerman as Jerry Kane, a real person who gained notoriety in 2010 after a violent confrontation with police in West Memphis.

Based on the trailer and a short clip I saw online, I initially expected a typical, somewhat superficial legal drama. I was completely mistaken – this turned out to be one of the year’s best films.

First Off, The Sovereign Poster And Slightly Inaccurate Synopsis Do The Movie No Favors

The international poster for Sovereign, featuring Nick Offerman with a rifle and an old van, is striking. However, the poster released in the United States is very different and gives the wrong impression. It makes this moving and complex film look like a cheap action movie. The brief description on Hulu doesn’t help either.

A father and son involved with an anti-government group had a tense standoff with the police chief, which then sparked a search to find them.

The film’s description might lead you to believe there’s a long-standing rivalry or connection between Nick Offerman’s character, Jerry Kane, and Dennis Quaid’s Chief John Bouchart. However, despite their individual storylines, they don’t actually meet until the very end of the movie.

I started watching, not realizing I was about to experience a deeply moving and intense portrayal of a character – one of the most powerful I’ve seen all year.

This Is A Gruelling And Emotional Pair Of Stories About Fathers And Sons

The documentary Sovereign centers around two father-son relationships. We follow Jerry and his son Joe (played by Jacob Tremblay) as they travel the country teaching people how to avoid foreclosure and promoting the ideas of the sovereign citizen movement. Simultaneously, the film portrays John Bouchart and his son Adam (played by Thomas Mass), with young Adam undergoing police training so he can work alongside his father.

Both stories beautifully depict the complicated bonds between fathers and sons, especially when they disagree. They also powerfully illustrate how a father’s mistakes can impact his child, culminating in some truly moving and memorable moments.

The film Sovereign is receiving rave reviews, with a 96% score from critics (and a 76% audience rating) on Rotten Tomatoes. I watched it and completely agree with the positive feedback – it’s a really gripping, well-made, and unsettling drama that more people should see.
