Ryan Coogler had a major breakthrough in 2025. With the release of his critically acclaimed film, Sinners, which grossed over $360 million globally, he proved his ability to create a blockbuster hit from scratch – a rare talent in today’s Hollywood. Considering his success, it’s surprising to learn that just a few years ago, Coogler worried his career in Hollywood wouldn’t last long.
In a recent New York Times interview, the director shared some surprising insights, including how he once felt he wouldn’t be making movies for much longer. He had a remarkably successful first ten years, launching his career with the acclaimed film Fruitvale Station in 2013, followed by hits like Creed and Black Panther. However, this period of success was deeply impacted by the loss of his friend and frequent collaborator, Chadwick Boseman, as the director explained.
I honestly didn’t believe I could succeed in this line of work, and I was starting to feel hopeless. Then, when Chad passed away, it made me re-evaluate everything I was doing.
Chadwick Boseman’s death in the summer of 2020 was a deeply personal loss for Ryan Coogler and created a huge professional hurdle. They were collaborating on the upcoming Black Panther sequel, and the film required significant revisions after Boseman’s passing. Given the immense difficulty of the situation, it’s understandable that Coogler questioned his path forward.
However, despite facing significant challenges, the film ultimately succeeded. Black Panther: Wakanda Forever tackled difficult themes of grief and loss while offering insightful political commentary and boasting impressive visuals. What could have been a failure instead became a triumphant story, earning critical acclaim and achieving box office success even as movie theaters were recovering from the pandemic. This success also helped director Ryan Coogler regain confidence in his future career. He explained,
There were times during the making of that movie when I honestly doubted we’d ever finish it. But once it was released and I was satisfied with the final result, I felt confident I could continue making films for years to come.
The director’s next project is confirmed to be Black Panther 3, though production hasn’t been scheduled and there’s no release date yet. Beyond that, he sees a wide range of possibilities for future films.
Yes, that’s exactly what comes to mind. After watching that movie, I picture a green meadow with the fog rolling in, like you often see in the Bay Area, at the start of a new day. It gives me a feeling of wide-open spaces and possibilities.
With Ryan Coogler’s proven skill, any project he directs immediately generates excitement, whether it’s an original story or a continuation of an existing one. While we look forward to what he does next, you can currently enjoy his latest work, Sinners, which is streaming on HBO Max.
