‘I Cried’: Tom Felton Revealed The Moment During His Draco Malfoy Fitting For Cursed Child That Made Him Very Emotional
After more than a decade since the final chapter of the Harry Potter movie saga (now available on Peacock), a familiar face from the franchise is making a comeback in the magical realm. I, along with countless other fans, am thrilled to announce that Tom Felton will once again embody Draco Malfoy for the Broadway adaptation of Harry Potter and the Cursed Child. This exciting news doesn’t seem to be lost on Felton himself, as he recently revealed the reason behind his emotional response during his costume fitting.
As a die-hard film enthusiast, I was absolutely flabbergasted when I saw Tom Felton slipping back into the dark robes and bleach-blonde tresses for the promotions of Cursed Child. He’s an uncanny resemblance to his fictional dad, Lucius Malfoy! The cherry on top is that the 37-year-old actor will be the same age as his now-grown Slytherin character. If you’re already tearing up over this, then Tom Felton’s story about his costume fitting, as shared with Access Hollywood, might just bring a tear to your eye.
Overwhelmed by emotion, a single tear slipped down my cheek as they placed the blonde wig atop my head. The costume was just one part of it, but the wig, the years of bleaching my own hair to achieve that shade, eleven years in total… It’s hard to explain, but seeing that wig brought back a flood of memories and feelings, making me emotional beyond words.
It seems to me that Tom Felton may have felt emotional while wearing the blonde wig because it was a very unusual experience for him. To put it another way, this situation might have been quite surreal for him. However, this is merely my conjecture. Nonetheless, this moment could be seen as coming full circle for Felton, given that he’s back to playing the role that catapulted his career. I can easily imagine myself feeling emotional in his shoes too, being the British actor.
I too am glad Felton is no longer required to endure the grueling process of dying his hair for Draco. To achieve Malfoy’s iconic bleach blonde look, the actor from The Borrowers had to apply multiple layers of peroxide and dye for days, a process he described as feeling like “fire ants” stinging his scalp. While artists often have to endure hardships for their craft, this seems particularly grueling.
In 2019, Tom Felton expressed doubts about reprising his character for a Cursed Child film. To date, there’s been no confirmed news of a movie adaptation of the play. However, the Broadway performance is certainly noteworthy. When he landed the role, even Jason Isaacs, who played Draco’s father (Lucius) in the films, congratulated him.
Although Draco actor Draco initially showed reluctance about participating in another Harry Potter project, Tom Felton is open to reappearing in the forthcoming Harry Potter series on HBO Max, though it’s uncertain if that will materialize. However, fans can at least anticipate his role in the upcoming Broadway production.
It’s not unreasonable to expect some fans might get emotional seeing Tom Felton perform live in “Harry Potter and the Cursed Child” shows, as it feels quite extraordinary to watch him reprise his role on stage, especially since the Broadway run starts in November and will last for 19 weeks.
